A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Playas, Provincia del Guayas, Ecuador, was reported only 24 minutes ago by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 14 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 5 May 2021 at 2:02 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
