ONE MONTH FROM TODAY, WE’LL MARK 5 YEARS SINCE THE ATTACK ON PULSE NIGHTCLUB. SUMMER: TODAY HOUSE LAWMAKERS VOTED TO MAKE THE NIGHTCLUB A NATIONAL MEMORIAL. IT’S ALREADY BECOME A PLACE WHERE LOCALS REMEMBER THE 49 PEOPLE KILLED. WESH 2’S GAIL PASCHALL-BROWN LOOKS AT TODAY’S VOTE GAIL: HOUSE RESOLUTION 49 PASSED THE U.S. HOUSE WEDNESDAY. HR 49 DESIGNATES THE SITE OF THE PULSE NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING IN ORLANDO AS A NATIONAL MEMORIAL SITE. THE BILL WAS INTRODUCED BY REPRESENTATIVES STEPHANIE MURPHY, DARREN SOTO, AND VAL DEMINGS. VAL DEMINGS: AS WE PASS THE LEGISLATION, I KNOW THAT THE MEMORIES OF THOSE WHO DIED WILL LIVE ON IN OUR HEARTS. THEY WILL NOT BE DEFINED BY THEIR TRAGIC DEATHS THROUGH GUN VIOLENCE, BUT BY THE LIVES THEY LIVED, THE PEOPLE THEY TOUCHED, AND THE LOVE THEY GAVE. GAIL: SUPPORTERS SAY WE OWE A NATIONAL MEMORIAL TO THE VICTIMS TO HONOR THEIR MEMORIES. >> A MEMORIAL THAT REFLECTS THE SAME LOVE, ACCEPTANCE, AND THE EXPERIENCE OF COMMUNITY THAT EMBODIES THE VICTIMS AND THAT EMBODIES THE LGBT COMMUNITY AT LARGE. GAIL: WE ARE ONE MONTH AWAY TO THE DATE OF THAT TRAGIC NIGHT FIVE YEARS AGO WHERE 49 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND MORE THAN 50 INJURED. THE GUNMAN, OMAR MATEEN, WAS KILLED IN A SHOOTOUT WITH THE LOCAL POLICE. REPRESENTATIVE DEMINGS: ORLANDO STRONG IS MORE THAN JUST A SLOGAN, IT IS A PROMISE TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER AND NEVER FORGET THOSE WE LOST AND THOSE WHO WERE INJURED ON THAT TRAGIC NIGHT.
