Thursday 8th July / presented by
Jesse Begley
On the morning of September 11, 1973 the Chilean military launched a coup to overthrow democratically elected Salvador Allende and install a repressive military dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet. This coup was fostered by the CIA on the orders of US President Nixon with the assistance of the Australian secret services. The involvement of Australia in this story was largely unknown until UNSW Professor Clinton Fernandes launched a four year campaign to release the redacted intelligence files. Jesse Begley spoke with Professor Fernandes on presenting his case against sanctioned secret court hearings.
