Home Secretary Priti Patel couldn’t have been clearer: the UK’s immigration and asylum system is broken and that the British people deserve a border security arrangement that commands their trust and confidence.
In her keynote speech for yesterday’s conference, jointly held by think-tanks Bright Blue and British Future, Patel correctly observed that concerns over immigration and pace of social change played their part in the UK’s decision to leave the EU and recent Conservative Party electoral success. She also stated that the dominance of liberal cosmopolitan mindsets in the British political classes meant these anxieties were all too often dismissed as forms of racism and bigotry.
