Recorded in 2010, Princeâs first posthumous album of all unreleased material is a state-of-the-union concept record in which he bluntly broadcasts his opinions on taxes, technology, drugs, religion, and the music industry.
Prince has some great protest songsââSign oâ the Times,â â1999,â âAmerica,â âRonnie, Talk to Russia,â and âLove Sign,â to name a fewâbut he was never a great protest songwriter. Amid all of the dizzying ups and downs of his four-decade career, one of the few things that remained constant was his willingness to put subtlety and artifice aside if there was a message that he felt needed to get across, be it âAbraham Lincoln was a racist,â âLetâs take all the guns away,â or âDonât let your children watch television until they know how to read.â He had some good points, and he could be passionate in his conviction and poignant in his starry-eyed pleas for peace, but the intricacies of his songs about love, sex, and God didnât always carry over to his polemics.
