Harry and Meghan announced back in January last year that they were stepping back from their roles as working royals to pursue a financially independent life. In a statement issued at the time, they said: "We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen." The ambition to lead an existence outside the confines of the Royal Family was similarly expressed by Edward VIII in an interview he gave to the BBC in 1969.
