Shapiro also joined 17 other attorneys general last month in sending a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland calling for the ghost-gun loophole to be closed. In 2019, Shapiro has said, 99 ghost guns were seized in Philadelphia, and that number skyrocketed to 250 in 2020.
“The numbers are clear – more ghost guns are hitting our streets,” Shapiro posted on Facebook on Thursday. “Today's actions from POTUS can help us stem the tide of these untraceable firearms making their way into the hands of prohibited purchasers.”
Biden also announced executive orders reducing access to stabilizing braces that can turn pistols essentially into rifles without the same regulations and establishing “red flag” laws to allow relatives or police to ask state courts to block a person from obtaining guns if they are a danger to themselves or others.
