Steve Perera
Attorney Estevan Perera was sworn as the Chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission in July 2020 under the Barrow Administration. He is a known U.D.P. supporter who has also served on various boards, including the Social Security Board, Belize Water Services, and the Belize Liquor License Board. And like several other political appointees, Perera has not resigned from his position since the change of government. Today, the Prime Minister called on Perera to do the honorable thing and resign.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“Everybody knows that Steve Perera is a U.D.P. and I told him, me and you are friends and you are U.D.P. and that is fine. That is your decision. When the former appointed Steve Perera? Three or four months before the general elections. He knew that an election was going to come. He didn’t appoint Steve Perera for three months or six months. He appointed Steve Perera for five years. Five years and now check this out when you appoint the election and boundaries commission, check this out. You appoint two members from the opposition. We appoint two and then you have Steve Perera. So you control the elections and boundaries commission. You think we stupid? That is your problem. You think you are smart but I am saying publicly right now Steve Perera needs to do the decent and honest thing and he needs to resign from the Elections and Boundaries Commission.”
