The expectation that V.I. Delegate to Congress Stacey Plaskett will join the powerful U.S. House of Representativesâ Ways and Means Committee is being viewed as not only historic but an opportunity for the Virgin Islands to have a much-needed voice for economic development at the highest level.
As the first member of a territory to join the exclusive tax-writing committee, Plaskett said she intends to âvigilantly watchâ for scurrilous tax policy and proposals that in previous years led to industries and businesses leaving the territories for better opportunities.
Instead, Plaskett said she will champion tax incentives that will attract investment and ultimately build up local economies, something she claimed was more prevalent in the 1990s and the decades preceding than today.
