The opening scenes of Pixar’s animation
Luca suggest an upbeat variation on
The Little Mermaid. Luca, a teenage sea monster whose benign looks are enhanced by what looks like a shower cap on his head, yearns to experience the world above the water.

His parents warn him off, telling him he’s likely to be hunted and killed by predatory humans. But his new friend, Alberto, who’s a little older and a lot more savvy about life on dry land, introduces him to the possibility of becoming a day tripper. When dry, he discovers, sea monsters take on human shape but once back in the water, they go back to normal. Suddenly, the opportunities for exploration seem limitless.
