Pinterest has updated its policies to prohibit ads that contain weight loss language and imagery.
This is the latest update by Pinterest aimed at providing support for users affected by negative body image or eating disorders. The updated policy will prohibit promoting weight loss or weight loss products, idealization or degradation of certain body types, or references to BMI. Ads promoting healthy well-being will be allowed as long as they don't focus on weight loss.
Content such as before-and-after weight loss imagery, body shaming, and weight loss/appetite supplements were previously barred from the site.
Pinterest developed its policy under guidance from The National Eating Disorders Association, which says Pinterest is the first major social media platform to take a stance against weight loss ads. "NEDA is encouraged by this necessary step in prioritizing the mental health and well-being of Pinners, especially those impacted by diet culture, body shaming, and eating disorders," says Elizabeth Thompson, Interim CEO for NEDA.
