A former tavern in Ellington from the 1800s, located at the current site of a direct marketing firm. (Ellington Historical Society)
ELLINGTON, CT — We return today to a fascinating picture book entitled Images of America: Ellington. The book, compiled by Lynn Kloter Fahy for the Ellington Historical Society, was first published in 2005, and contains 128 pages of amazing photos and stories of the small town formerly known as "the Great Marsh." It may be purchased from the Nellie McKnight Museum store here.
On page 103, we discover the William Morgan Tavern at what is now 56 Main St., opposite the Center School. From 1825 to 1828, it was the first home of the Fayette Lodge No. 69 A.F. and A.M. The first post office in Ellington Center was established here in 1822; William Morgan was the initial postmaster.
