Physical examinations, consent trouble Cheatham County's School Board

Discussions concerning student physical examinations and consent were at the forefront last week during the Cheatham County School board's regular meeting.
Fourth district board member, James Gupton, argued fervidly against language being used to outline the necessity of consent in conducting physical examinations where child abuse or neglect is suspected.
“I really don’t see where consent is needed,” Gupton said. “When it comes down to the schools, we don’t have to have probable cause. We can work off of reasonable suspicion.
“Our school system is trusted and dedicated to children, to feed the children, our school nurses help them with their medications."
