Matt Wood was diagnosed in early March with a rare form of cancer.
At the time, he was advised that he would have to have it surgically removed, which would require the removal of his nose and possibly a portion of his upper jaw.
He and the wife he married shortly after being diagnosed spent weeks exploring other options.
She's a family doctor. He just didn't want to have that surgery. And with good reason.
"Cutting off your nose and possibly losing your jaw, that's scary," he says. "And completely life-changing."
After seeing specialists in Boston and New York with some experience in treating this specific cancer — metastatic sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma — Wood decided to forego the surgery his Arizona doctors recommended in favor of a more experimental treatment.
