Ticks can't fly or jump, but they can "quest", which means to wait patiently in position for a suitable host to pass by. They hold onto leaves and grass by their third and fourth pair of legs and when a potential host comes by, they hop on. Once on the host, they look for a place to feed, such as the ear or other areas where the skin is thinner, such as the groin, armpits and scalp. Photo Public Health Image Library.
