People are allowed to leave the Gaza Strip for Egypt for the first time. Until now, the Rafah crossing was only open to aid convoys. The opening of Rafah was brokered by the Gulf Emirate of Qatar in consultation with the U.S., Israel, Egypt and Hamas. About 50 foreign nationals, including Americans and Canadians, gathered at the border on Wednesday, according to eyewitnesses. People with Egyptian, Jordanian and Algerian citizenship would also be waiting to leave. It is unclear when the border will close again.
