If he doesn't take the offer, Edilson Trejo will face a first-degree murder charge and possible life sentence in the killing last June, a Morris County prosecutor said during a virtual court hearing.
Trejo, 22, has about seven weeks to decide whether he will plead guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter. The offer, placed on the record for the first time at the hearing, will expire at the time of his next court hearing on April 29, said Kelly Sandler, an assistant prosecutor.
Trejo is accused of stabbing another man nine times in the back, neck and torso after a night of drinking at his Parsippany Road apartment on June 20. Defense attorneys have argued he acted in self-defense after disarming the knife-wielding victim, identified only as "BC" in court documents.
