On March 28, two militants carried out a gruesome suicide attack at Makassar Cathedral in Makassar, in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province, on Sulawesi Island, targeting a Palm Sunday Mass. At the conclusion of the service, the attackers made an attempt to reach the cathedral but they were stopped by the police, as such they detonated a pressure cooker improvised explosive device (IED). From the incident, at least 20 people were wounded in the attack, and both the militants were killed. The perpetrators were members of the pro-Islamic State group known as Jamaat Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which has previously carried out similar attacks on churches and Christian targets in Indonesia, especially during religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter. The perpetrators were a newlywed couple who had learned how to make explosives from the internet, echoing recent Indonesian attacks carried out by married couples or whole families.
