Our Hidden History: Racism and Black suffrage in the Dorr Rebellion

The 1842 Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island raised profound questions of citizenship. When white reformers claimed to speak on behalf of the disenfranchised, but refused to support Black voting rights, African Americans allied with the established government to put down the reformers' revolt.  They understood the “privileges and immunities” clause of the 1787 federal Constitution to provide a broad protection of rights, including suffrage.
