Other Voices: Have you heard of Tonga? Why it matters to U.S. interests

Our table was small but festive. It was festooned with a large Tongan flag and local handicrafts. Freshly printed pamphlets that detailed our projects were aesthetically placed and a metal bucket sat in the middle. We had worked out an agreement with our favorite local restaurant that for every receipt dropped into the bucket, our nonprofit would receive a percentage of the bill; an incredibly generous offer.
We had arrived before happy hour to prepare and had just finished decorating as the hour hand began eating into the number 5. Like clockwork, the front door opened and patrons shuffled in. Many of the faces were familiar and we were greeted with nods and a few interested glances at the unusual cultural paraphernalia.
