A sudden localised storm uprooted hundreds of trees and levelled 230 houses in Faridpur on Thursday morning, affecting 450 people in five villages, confirmed the local authorities.
Though in media coverage the storm was called a tornado, the Met Office declined to recognise it as one and instead referred to it as a strong nor’wester.
‘An extremely severe nor’wester may look like a tornado to the normal eye,’ said meteorologist Shahinul Islam.
The Met Office however could neither confirm the speed of the wind and rain nor give any details on the other parameters to support its claim.
