A campfire ban will go into effect Thursday in all state-managed parks and forests east of Interstate 5, the Oregon Department of Forestry said Wednesday.
The list of prohibited fires includes any open flame – even in designated campfire rings – with the exception of portable stoves and lanterns with liquid fuel.
“The step of banning campfires east of Interstate 5 was deemed a necessary measure to protect life and property,” said the news release.
With at least 70% of fires in Oregon sparking from human activity, the new restriction aims to preserve the state’s already challenged firefighting resources for “existing large fires as well as new blazes that may emerge.”
