Omaha Police said a fugitive trying to escape sparked a rooftop standoff. Officers arrested suspect John Mays, 44, wanted for felony domestic violence charges and escape charges out of Lancaster County around 7:15 a.m. Monday.Mays was located by officers with the Fugitive Task Force and an OPD K9 at a home near 35th and Howard streets. Officers said he tried to escape through a window, then got stuck on the roof. The Omaha Fire Department brought in a ladder truck. After Mays was talked off the roof, he was taken into custody and evaluated for possible injuries at the Nebraska Medical Center. An investigation revealed Mays had also assaulted a woman inside the home with a knife before officers arrived at the scene. Mays was booked into Douglas County Corrections on his outstanding warrant and on charges of terroristic threats and domestic violence assault.
