Onondaga Colored Battalion was denied opportunity to join NY National Guard after Civil War

With the approach of the 1876 centennial, some Syracuse Black Civil War veterans hoped to create their own battalion with dreams of joining the New York State National Guard. But denied the opportunity to serve their home state because of the color of their skin, the Onondaga Colored Battalion faded away after only two years.
