One year after change, fire departments respond to fewer medical calls

 It’s been more than a year since Genesee County 911 implemented a rule that changed how fire departments are called to Tier 1 medical alerts.
 This rule, voted in unanimously by the Genesee County Medical Control Authority (GCMCA) and which went into effect in October 2019, means that in Tier 1 medical emergencies, if an ambulance is within eight miles, then the municipal fire department is not called to respond. This was implemented to make dispatching services more consistent.
 Tier 1 medical emergencies are urgent and typically involve heart or breathing problems. Since the change went into effect, local fire departments have responded to fewer medical calls.
