I THINK it is hard to let go of anger toward somebody who has committed the same mistakes repeatedly. And it is more disheartening if that person promised not to do it again but still, it was done once more and sad but with intent. How can one forgive a person who has done something you truly hated most?
Just last Saturday, I decided to see my patients in the rehabilitation center. I guess it has been a while and I would love to hear about their progress. A male patient with depression shared about his upcoming schedule of discharge in five days. And so, I asked him, "what are your thoughts now? He was very open to sharing that he still cannot forgive his wife for pawning their properties for reasons that are unacceptable. He added that he works so hard for his children to go to college, but the wife does not worry about it at all. And now as he starts a new beginning, he said all his finances are depleted. And he cannot forgive because this has been done not once but several times.
