Even when the camera is off, Craig Brewer is a very good storyteller.
In his first interview with The Chronicle in 2005, before his first big hit “Hustle & Flow” was released, the raised-in-Vallejo filmmaker talked about the incredible film education he got from his father, who died suddenly in 1998, leaving Brewer with plenty of advice and $20,000 he used to make his first movie.
Now an established filmmaker with credits including 2007’s “Black Snake Moan” and 2019’s “Dolemite Is My Name,” he’s still eager to talk about his movie education that started in the Bay Area.
