The summer Olympics are underway next week.Lancaster County’s own Casey Kaufhold – and the rest of the U.S. archery team – began their journey to Tokyo on Thursday. For Kaufhold, the journey began years ago. Even her elementary school teachers knew she was bound for great things. Before she aced the U.S. Olympic archery trials, she was an ace student in the Conestoga Valley School District."We are Smoketown proud of Casey, that's for sure," fourth grade teacher Gina Novak said. Her teachers at Smoketown Elementary School remember her as a confident, happy young lady. Even as a first-grader, she had a unique gift."One of the things she told me is when she came in one day and said to the first graders, 'Hey, I took my bow out and I shot a mouse,'" first grade teacher Brenda Yoder said."Everything Casey did, she made it look easy. Everything just seemed to come natural to her, but she never bragged about anything. She was never judgmental," Novak said."She picked up skills really easily. She could do anything," physical education teacher Lori Greiner said. It's Kaufhold's attitude that also stuck with Greiner."I remember her smile. You could see it all the way down the hall. No matter what else was going on, it just kind of shined," Greiner said."When she came upon a challenge, if something didn't work out the first time, she figured out a way to make it work. She was a problem solver," fifth and sixth grade teacher Leanne Kellenberger said.During her elementary years, Kaufhold never shared much about her archery success. But when her teachers found out she was Olympic-bound, it wasn't a shock."I was not surprised that she had great success because her personality showed that she was willing to go after something and strive for it," Yoder said. Now, they can't wait to cheer on one of their own."I love watching the Olympics, but now I'm so excited to actually see someone that I know," Kellenberger said.
