The harbour boom is deployed by boat as part of the effort to contain the fictional leak.
A sunken boat leaking diesel and hydraulic oil into New Plymouth's inner harbour tested port staff and equipment.
Fifteen people, led by Taranaki Regional Council on-scene commander Jared Glasgow, responded after the MV Nicola sank in a private marina last week.
However, it was only a training exercise designed to test staff skills and equipment, and no vessel actually went down.
The first course of action for the response team, which included representatives from Taranaki Regional Council, Port Taranaki and local industry, was to stop the 'leak' at its source, and then contain any of the material floating on the water.
