A case heading to the U.S. Supreme Court next year could have profound impacts on abortion access in Ohio, with advocates on both sides of the debate hoping — or fearing — that justices will roll back reproductive rights established decades ago.
The Supreme Court announced this week that it will review a Mississippi law, tossed out by lower courts, that bans most abortions after 15 weeks — before a fetus is considered viable under current legal standards. Justices aren't expected to make a decision until next year, when Ohio will be in the throes of a contentious midterm election.
"The fact that this is going before the Supreme Court is putting 50 years of precedent around reproductive rights at risk and in question," said Laurel Powell, spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio. "Anti-abortion politicians have really fought for this moment."
