The Oakland A’s have begun to get over a couple of their early-season injuries, but one of them might turn out to be a long-term issue.
New closer
Trevor Rosenthal hasn’t pitched yet after going on the injured list Opening Day, and now insider Martin Gallegos offers the following report:
“Bob Melvin says shoulder surgery is on the table for Trevor Rosenthal. He’ll make a decision in the next few days.”
In particular, the operation would be for thoracic outlet surgery, adds Gallegos.
Thoracic outlet syndrome is a major injury for a pitcher. One recent A’s hurler who dealt with it was Andrew Triggs, and you can read more info about the condition and procedure here. It’s something pitchers can come back from, but it takes a while. Matt Kawahara of the S.F. Chronicle suggests “at least 12 weeks” for recovery, which is a minimum of half the season.
