Residents of Sydney’s inner west who turned to the popular Bay Run exercise route on the first day of school holidays under lockdown on Monday expressed a sentiment that echoed across the city: it felt a bit like groundhog day.
Last year, crowds on the 7.5 kilometre track around Iron Cove during the height of the pandemic raised concerns residents were not adhering to social distancing rules and prompted police to patrol the route on horseback.

The track was devoid of big crowds but a steady stream of exercisers were treading the familiar loop as Sydney’s lockdown shuttered businesses, crushed holiday plans and returned workers home for the next two weeks.
