Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 25) — In the absence of a ceasefire, government forces clashed with members of the New People’s Army in Negros Oriental on Christmas Eve, leaving two rebels dead, according to the military.
In a statement on Friday, the Philippine Army's Third Infantry Division said the encounter happened at Sitio Libjo in Barangay Napacao, Siaton town at around 7:25 pm on Thursday.
Elements of the 11th Infantry Battalion responded after residents reported the presence of armed communist rebels in the area. The press release did not mention how long the firefight lasted, but said two bodies were recovered on the enemy side, along with a caliber 5.56 mm M653 baby armalite, a caliber .45 pistol, two magazines of M14, and personal belongings.
