The New Orleans City Council held its Crime Commission meeting on Monday where NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson addressed the ongoing car break-ins plaguing the city's residents. Ferguson revealed that the NOPD continues to make arrests of repeat offenders for the crimes. According to Ferguson, they arrested a 14-year-old over the weekend and are currently searching for a 12 and 13-year-old in connection with the break-ins. Ferguson also said that these teens are getting out of custody quickly. According to Ferguson, if a teen is arrested for a car break-in in New Orleans at 10 a.m. he or she could be out that night. District Attorney Jason Williams was also in attendance at the meeting. He revealed in his first week as district attorney that he was moving all major violent crimes against juveniles ages 15, 16, and 17 back to Juvenile Court. He ran on a platform of criminal justice reform and said that prosecuting teens to the fullest extent has not fixed juvenile crime in the city. Carjackings increased in 2020 to 235, up from 105 the year before, according to data from Jeff Asher, who compiles crime data for city council.
