TOKYO -- Influenza outbreaks were not seen in Japan this season, with the number of patients estimated at around a mere one-thousandth of the usual tally, according to an analytical evaluation by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID).
While it is reported that at least 10 million people catch the seasonal flu every year in Japan, the number of influenza patients this year remains at an estimated 14,000, marking the the first time that an outbreak has not been recorded since annual research on flu cases was launched in 1987. Although there had been fears last autumn of a double-outbreak of the coronavirus and influenza, it appears that rigorous enforcement of anti-coronavirus measures, including wearing masks and washing hands, proved effective in curbing infections.
