Several thousand people gathered Saturday in Niamey to support the military regime resulting from a coup. By mid-afternoon, the Seyni Kountché stadium, the largest in Niger, was two-thirds full. The National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) took power with General Abdourahamane Tiani at its head. The CNSP has since taken the France, the former colonial power, as its main target. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided after the coup to impose heavy economic and financial sanctions on Niger.
