While the start of the pandemic landed squarely in the middle of the NFL’s off-season last year, the league was in some sense the sports world’s first to return to action, airing its annual draft as scheduled in April. It wasn’t exactly the spectacle the NFL envisioned, though. Plans to host the event in Las Vegas were abandoned. Team personnel were barred from congregating in war rooms. Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the picks from his basement.
This year, the NFL draft arrives with more certainty alongside the hope. Front offices will gather in person again to wrestle over selections. Goodell will lead the pageantry from a stage in Cleveland, with a limited number of prospects and fans in attendance. And perhaps the surest thing of all: Star quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Clemson will be the first overall pick.
