A new report that found that more than half of pregnancies in Papua New Guinea's East New Britain Province are unintended, and its authors are recommending that more targeted services to improve family planning.
Researchers from the Burnet Institute in Australia, and partners in PNG, surveyed nearly 700 pregnant women.
They found that 55 per cent of the women said their pregnancies were "unintended", and that just 18 per cent had used family planning methods or knew of the different methods available.
The study's lead authors are now urging for health authorities in PNG to urgently invest in family planning services throughout the country.
