On Monday, council approved a $33 million operating budget for the city for 2021.
"It's a lean budget," Maurer said. "It's just been a crazy year with the pandemic. Who would have known last March when everything was shut down where our income tax base would be?" 
The budget includes money for the hiring of two new police officers, one of whom will be a detective who will work on drug-related crimes.
"We didn’t fare too badly in 2020, given all of the circumstances that were a headwind against us," Maurer said. "The general fund balance at the end of 2020 was a respectable $1,223,000."
