This summer, a University of Montana professor will run a new course focused on current health issues and ongoing confusion perpetuated around certain health topics.
COMX 391, or “Health Misinformation in the 21st Century,” comes after a year riddled with misinformation as the United States battled the COVID-19 pandemic, and is now trying to vaccinate enough of the population to reach herd immunity.
“I just started realizing, all of the messages are coming from so many places, and people just don’t really know who to trust anymore and they don’t really know how to determine if something is true, or false, or misleading or a myth.” Heather Voorhees, an assistant communication studies professor, said. “So I just started thinking about, ‘How can I help people be better consumers of all that health information that’s out there?”
