A new German beer hall is coming to a prominent spot near the Ohio River.Joe Phillips, owner of Pints & Union in New Albany, Indiana, is planning a second food and beverage concept in Downtown Jeffersonville. It's called Common Haus and it will be located at 134 Spring St., the former home of Goodwood Brewhouse and Live Room, and before that, Big Four Burgers.In an interview Tuesday, Phillips said he has wanted to do a German beer hall concept for several years now, even before he opened Pints & Union in 2018.Phillips has been to most of the major German eateries in the Midwest, from Jasper, Indiana, to Columbus, Ohio, and back to Louisville. Without getting into specifics, he said he wants to elevate the offerings Common Haus, making it better than anything he's had in the region.The Spring Street property has been vacant since an electrical fire in February 2020. Goodwood CEO Ted Mitzlaff said in September 2020 the brewery intended to reopen there in first quarter of 2021, but that never materialized.Phillips said while the roof looks bad, the damage to the 7,000-square-foot building is mostly cosmetic. Even so, they plan to gut it and rebuild everything from scratch. The estimated total cost of the project is still unknown at this time.The second floor will be an indoor and outdoor beer garden and event rental space, and the third floor will be a private dining room with a private patio space. Eventually, Phillips said he and Roger Baylor, who will be over Common Haus beverage program, plan to open a rooftop bar. They also have plans for a walk-up street food window that will be open on the weekends.Common Haus is expected to open in fall of 2021, just in time for Oktoberfest.
