More than 5,000 veterans, their spouses and children are buried at the cemetery, including Navy Steward Mate 1st Class Ignacio C. Farfan, 21, of Hagåtña. Farfan's remains were identified in 2015 and returned to Guam in 2018, 77 years after he was killed in the attacks in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Farfan was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Farfan. Upon his return to Guam, he was buried with full military honors.
