Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, confirmed Naftali Bennett as the country’s new prime minister on Sunday evening, at the head of a narrow majority coalition of small parties that has replaced Benjamin Netanyahu for the first time in 12 years.
Naftali Bennett is set to become Israel’s 36th prime minister on Sunday, completing a feat of political daring and audacity that saw him convert 6% of the vote — seven seats in Israel’s 120-seat Knesset — into a path to the country’s leadership.
Israel’s new government is facing a crisis of legitimacy as a prime minister whose party won only 6% of the vote is set to take the reins of government, while the party that won the most votes is being pushed out of office and into opposition.
