That Storm Surge could be the worst part of this storm. So we will be on that during this hour. Ill be watching. Thanks alex. Thank you. We are going straight to bill karins. Msnbcs meteorologist. Nbc News Meteorologist for the latest on the situation there. Bill, what can we expect now in florida . This is when all the damage is happening. We cant show you where the worst Storm Surge is. But we know it is moving in. We have had reports of a ten foot Storm Surge in sarasota. As we go down the coast, all the way to naples, its been at least five to six foot Storm Surge. That is higher than helene in most cases so we have new significant damage that is being done tonight. As the storm is moving inland. The winds are still pushing that water against the coast. It is still rushing in. The other thing you will notice, the black line is the center. Just north of the center which has been the past five hours over tampa, torrential rain. We are talking two to three inches per hour. Now that is starting to slide along i4. That will head toward Winter Haven and south of orlando. You can see, very rare i get this purple on the map. Cam pa, your Rainfall Rate will slowly diminish. You could end up with maybe a foot, footandahalf f orion. That is why you are under a Flash Flood Emergency in the tampa area. Saint petersburg included in that. So our Storm Surge, we have a couple of gauges giving us readings. We know further up closer to the center. Right in here, venice, sarasota. Thats where the peak of the surge has occurred. It is happening now. Headed toward High Tide so the water is rushing in. And we get the damaging waves on top of it. Huge concerns for Tampa Bay going into this storm. These are negative numbers because the wind is still blowing out. Notice that the wind is now starting to shift. And stephanie was saying some of the water will return. But it will not be a huge Storm Surge. It will be returning back to normal. We are at 1. 2 million people without power. Some of the highest gusts we have seen, bradenton, 96, saint petersburg, 96. When you get the 90 Mileper Hour Wind gusts you are getting roof damage. You are getting the Gas Station signs, things like that blowing around. But you are also getting significant Tree Damage falling on houses, power lines, cars, and that will be widespread all through the sarasota area. Headed up to tampa. Here is our flash flood warning. You run from the water but you cant evacuate when you are inland. Tonight, water will be a problem if you are near any small rivers or creeks, they are not going to drain. Because it is so windy, first responders will not be going out. The storm is now east of sarasota. We think it will go just south of orlando. Around 4 00 a. M. , 5 00 a. M. And off the coast. This storm is gone by 10 00 a. M. We will have a very good idea of just how bad the storm was. Probably by midmorning or so. That is when it will be safe enough for the helicopters to fly. Well come back to you for updates during this hour, we are headed to nbc correspondent Jesse Kirsch in sarasota, florida. Whats the situation there now . Reporter lawrence, about 90 minutes ago it was silent out here. I could hear birds chirping. Look at it now. We are just blocks from the Sarasota Bay and we are almost entirely it seems on an island right now. I say almost entirely because i cannot confirm for sure on one side of this building for our own safetys sake. We are surrounded by water on this ramp. You can see all the leaves, all the Palm Trees blowing around with the Rain Whipping around as well. One of the stories of this storm is it is not just about Storm Surge and wind. It is about the debris left over from helene. That is why we are inside a barrage i will show you the main road here in downtown sarasota. It gives you an idea of how much water has rushed inland. You see the side of a Stop Sign partially covered. The side of a street sign. Off in the distance, thats the main road in downtown sarasota. We can see water rippling. That means there is water very much in downtown sarasota. Well head back over to our main position because that is our little fortified corner here. All of that debris is left over. Only 50 was collected even with a 24 7 operation. That is how much Damage Helene had done. Here in sarasota, we were looking at potentially twice as much Storm Surge compared to helene with milton on its way. And this is the scene again. We have this little corner set up so we have protection from the flying debris. The top of this Parking Deck there was some kind of piece of metal siding. So the threat from debris is very much real. And you can see all this water. It is almost over the lip of what is supposed to be the first floor of a Parking Deck. And we have seen flashes of green light suggesting that transformers are bursting. It appears that power has gone out. We are in the backside of the eye wall. 90 minutes ago it was serene here. Cars streaming their tires. Now, it is not a place to be outside. When we are aiming your camera down at that water, what would you estimate the depth of that water to be . Reporter yeah, its hard to know for sure, lawrence, but this is a ramp. So this is not flat ground. So if it looks shallow on one end, it is not so on the other. I mean, certainly it has to be a couple of feet lawrence. It is hard to give you a clear estimation because of how bark it is. Even in the sections with light. Another piece of siding lying on the deck. Even with the lights, that are showing, i cant see the bottom right . The water. And obviously it is not clear water either. But it is deep enough that i cannot tell where the tile is down there. Certainly, lawrence, if you look at lets say the trunk of a typical car, i dont know, a couple of feet off the ground, you look at that white siding down there at The Edge, thats a Parking Garage. Thats the first floor of a Parking Garage and the water has almost come up to The Edge of that first level. And gone over the top. It is enough water i saw a Trash Can, a large Trash Can like the kind you put at The End of a street. One was floating in there. So tough to give you a firm number. It is just, the amount that there is right . That it is pouring over and filling this much of the street. And overwhelming the Storm Drain System over here. Jesse, i saw your coverage earlier tonight when the Eye Of The Hurricane passed over you. Actually the calmest point in the storm. And it has that illusion for people that it is over. But this is what happens after the eye. Reporter yeah, absolutely. And the problem is if you go out in the middle of the eye, you dont know exactly when it will end and we will get a powerful pop of wind right now. Im sure you can hear it and see it and look at all the Water Flying off the side of the Parking Deck. You can see the force of the winds and the leaves and debris flying around. You dont know when it is going to end. It goes like that. We started hearing the Breeze Pick back up. Before you know it, the top of the 9 00 p. M. Hour, we had gone from serene quiet to the winds picking back up and here we are now about 90 minutes later so if you venture out in the middle of that, you dont know when you need to get back inside. We knew the backside would be the worst portion of the storm. This is where you see the biggest threat from the wind and the Storm Surge so this is not the side to be out and playing with. But if there is a Silver Lining or a thing of hope here, it is that we have heard from the county they have had close to 10,000 people showing up at shelters in Sarasota County alone and that is the highest volume of people they have seen showing up in their shelters. People are taking this storm seriously in a different kind of way. Because it is less than two weeks since helene made landfall. I saw waist High Water in one gentlemans home from the storm that was supposed to be half the Storm Surge of this one, that was a Wakeup Call for those who might have been on The Edge about evacuation. Hopefully more people have left. If they are still in the zones and have somehow managed to survive the Storm Surge as it comes in, no first responders will be coming for them for a while. Because the city tells us their officers have been off the streets a couple of hours because of the wind gusts. I cant tell how much water is out on the causeway. Or beyond on the Barrier Islands but presumably, you couldnt even drive through any of this right now. Jesse kirsch, thank you very much. We will come back to you as the situation develops there. And joining us now is Nbc News correspondent marissa parra. From tampa. Whats the situation there now . Reporter hey lawrence. I want to point out what we can see. We are also taking Safety Precautions that we will illustrate for you in just a moment. You can see the wind gusts, look at those trees behind me, the best indicater for how strong the wind is. And we are not going out there. We are trying to keep our crew and ourselves safe. Trying to practice what we preach here. It is not safe. There is a reason first responders have in several counties suspended their rescue operation. They are hunkering down. This is something that we knew we were warned in advance that was going to be a likely possibility. Because of all of that debris. Governor Ron Desantis said only 50 of that debris was clear. It takes months to clear that kind of debris after a hurricane like helene. They had days. The workers had to evacuate themselves. This is why they are saying it is too dangerous to evacuate. Those wind gusts, you dont want to drive in those kinds of conditions. We have seen so many mandatory evacuation zones. The same ones we know first responders had a difficult time evacuating people from. Whether it is Pinellas County where we are, or Hillsborough County where tampa is. There is pushback first responders were finding. They told me they did not see the same this time. It is a Ghost Town in those zone a, zone b. The highest risk of flooding and Storm Surge. The shelters here, they are swelling up. We heard from the Florida Division of Emergency Management say 100,000 people are believed to be in the shelters around the state. In fact, where we are right now, Hillsborough County, six of the two dozen shelters are at full capacity. But obviously, there is still Space And Plenty of those shelters and i will tell you right now. When we talk about the importance of taking precautions i want to show you what our situation looks like. We can easily take cover. We are flanked by walls on either side. This is a hotel on this side of us. Over here is where we can take shelter if we have to. Conditions gets too bad. And these lights here, it wasnt even within maybe the last 30 minutes lawrence. They were starting to flicker. 1. 2million people without power in the state of florida. We see plenty of instances of power outages. We know this is something a lot of people are seeing we might soon be among those. Lawrence . Nbcs marissa parra, thank you so much for that report. Nearly 6 Million people are under a mandatory evacuation order, floridas Emergency Management official says it is the largest Evacuation Florida has seen since Hurricane Irma in 2017. And, Florida Resident Donald trumps lies about the federal Government Response to Hurricanes Helene and Hurricane Milton are makeing the situation worse. Today President Biden said this. The last few week haves been reckless and irresponsible and relentless promotion of disinformation and outright lies about whats going on. It is undermining the confidence of people in florida. And the incredible Rescue Work undertaken. There are thousands of fellow americans who are putting their lives on the line to do the dangerous work that needs to be done now. And it is harmful to those who most need the help. These lies are unamerican and there is simply no place for them. Not now, not ever. Former President Trump has led this onslaught of lies. Assertions are made that properties are been confiscated. That is not true. That people are receiving 750 in cash and no more. That is simply not true either. Money needed for the crises are being diverted to Migrant Ins what the heck are they talking about . Stop it. Its outrageous, its just not true. The claims are getting more bizarre. Marjorie taylor greene, the congresswoman from georgia is now saying the federal government is literally controlling the weatherment were controlling the weather. Its beyond ridiculous. Its so stupid. Its got to stop. Today, Vice President harris joined President Biden for a briefing before she traveled to nevada this afternoon. Vice president harris called into cnn and the Weather Channel hours before Hurricane Milton made landfall. I have spoken with local officials who have been struck for example by hurricane helene. And they are doing an extraordinary job in trying to combat the misinformation. Im talking about sheriffs and mayors and im talking local officials. I dont even know their Party Affiliation by the way. Leaders on the ground who know it is not in the best interest of the people living in those areas to not know their rights, not to know what they are entitled to and to be afraid of seeking help. It is dangerous. It is unconscionable frankly that anybody who would consider themselves a leader would mislead desperate people to the point those desperate people would not receive the aid to which they were entitled. Sadly, there are some folks who during the moment of a crisis will be very predatory and start jacking up prices like gasoline or hotels. Or airlines. To take advantage of the desperation people are experiencing so anybody who is thinking about jacking up those prices, those companies that are thinking about doing it, know we are monitoring and we are launching and there is that kind of Price Gouging that there will be a consequence for that. Our next guest, Florida Congressman Maxwell frost represents orlando which is expected to get as much as 15 inches of rain. Yesterday, Congressman Frost joined the national Ocean Inand atmospheric Administrations Hurricane hunters and flew directly into Hurricane Milton. It was a life changing experience. Flying through a hurricane, seeing things up close. But also, just showed me firsthand how important the Work Noaa does. Getting to spend hours with the scientists, i learned so much about the work they do in the airplane and the work they do in gathering that data is what helps us Save Lives. Helpswith evacuation orders. What it looks like, the type of devastation it will cause. Joining us now is congressman maxwell frost. A member of the Harris Walz national advisory board. Congressman, what did you learn yesterday that has changed the way you are witnessing this Hurricane Tonight . Im here in orlando where a few hours away of getting the serious part of the storm. We have had Rain And Wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour or so far. Being on that plane a few days ago was very enlightening and educational. Seeing all the models. We have great technology now. But there are still Data Points that have to be collected within the hurricane. And for people who dont know, noaa which is the national oceanic administration has an amazing heroic team they call Hurricane Hunters. They are pilots. Technicians, scientists, meteorologists. And they fly into these storms, flights going anywhere between eight and 12 hours. And they drop beacons within the Storm Drop to different things within it to collect data about the pressure. The size of the waves. That is how we get all the information about the storms. That data literally saves lives and i have to mention that there are people in congress who have voted against funds for this important administration. Project 2025 wants to get rid of noaa. It would literally cause us to not be able to save more lives. Either way, it was incredibly intense experience. There were times when we free fell thousands of feet because of the way that they fly the plane within the hurricane. But it was an honor to be there. I learned so much about how important the Work Noaa does is. And how important the Hurricane Hunters are. I want to go back over that point about project 2025. Wanting to abolish noaa. Along with abolish the department of education. Abolish is a word that appears frequently in that document. But they want to abolish the scientific collection of data by the federal government. To warn people in florida how to save their lives and how much time they have to save their lives. They just want to eliminate that information system. Yes. And this whole thing of project 2025 Wanting to get rid of noaa while at the same time wanting to get rid of the mention of Climate Change and the Climate Crisis as well, shows that not only do they want to deny the issue, but they want to deny us the means and solutions to deal with the issue. And we see this happen all the time. Im on the house oversight committee. I have my colleagues on the other side of the aisle who constantly want to badger and talk about a lot of our agencies and departments. They are not doing their jobs. They are horrible. And at the same time, vote against budget increases to ensure these agencies have the resources they need. It is complete hypocrisy and it is what is going on in florida. The thing about it is this data saves lives. There are people who have already died because of this Hurricane Today and we are going to have more discussions over the coming days and weeks about how these two hurricanes that seemingly came out of nowhere are here because of the Climate Crisis and because it is here. But ill tell you lawrence when i was driving back i was on i4 leaving the tampa area. Coming back to orlando. And i broke down being in the car. Im in stop in go traffic. Im looking to my left and right and all you see is all these cars full of families. Seniors. People and you look at their faces. They packed up their entire livelihood and they are scared. And this is becoming more and more the normal occurrence for floridians so when we talk about the impacts of Climate Change, it is human lives but it is also people being displaced and leaving their homes time and time again. It is really sad. We have been focusing on making sure people are prepared here many Central Florida. But we were at the Emergency Operation centers earlier today. I met with Lunch Workers who served lunch to kids at school who are staying overnight in shelters to feed the people in the shelters three meals a day while we get through this storm. If i know one thing is for sure, it is you are in Central Florida and across the state, we will help Each Other get through this. We will clean up and then we will continue to have these conversations on how we need to make sure we prevent these kinds of events happening again. I mean, we are having too many once in A Hundred year storms the last five years. In all of your conversations, the people living in the path of this hurricane, have you found people who believe republican Marjorie Taylor greenes statement that i guess President Biden controls the weather . I have had people ask questions about the misinformation. We saw former President Donald Trump talking about the 750 Dollar Number without talking about the fact there are different buckets people can apply to, to get direct assistance from fema. One of them is an immediate cash send out to help people. Who need food, baby formula. 750 can go a long way with that. There is another bucket of funds where people can help recover their home. So there is a lot of misinformation out there. And the problem here and President Biden brought this up. Is that when that misinformation goes into the public and people believe it, it means they dont believe or have any kind of faith in their government. And when they dont have faith in their fema, it means they wont come to these organizations to get the help they need. Which means there are people out there who need help. What people should know, President Biden and Vice President harris sign an authorized Prelandfall Emergency Declaration for fema. Fema and the federal government has resources up and down the state. Working closely with the state and municipal governments. And we are working together to handle this. And the last thing we need are politicians trying to make political points and score political points out of this horrible tragedy. Right now, we have to come together to Save Lives and keep people safe. A lot of these victims cannot hear you say that. Their Phone Batteries might be dying and they might not be able to have internet access. Word of mouth becomes more important than it normally is. They have been poisoning the word of mouth. Or trying to. How much is that geting in the way of helping people . What it does is it erodes faith. When i come to a mic and i say something. When someone from fema says something. We need folks who are watching. We always say here in florida, we have to take care of Each Other. Neighbors have to take care of neighbors. Im here in my parents how now. It will hit here in orlando. Just in a couple of hours. We havent gotten the worst of it yet. My dad was out talking with neighbors. And the problem is when people start believing this and misinformation, they could be spreading lies and again, if those lies get spread. , the help they need and the help they deserve. And so, again. It is dangerous. It can cost us human lives. Large platforms, spread misand disinformation. Just to try to get ahead. Just to try to get political points. Its a shame and it will cost lives. We need people to focus on the truth. We. We cannot play politics. Thank you very much for joining us tonight. Thank you. And, we have much more ahead as our coverage of Hurricane Milton continues. Hurricane milton continues. If youre living with dry amd, you may be at risk for developing geographic atrophy, or ga. Lets go to Meteorologist Bill karins to give us the latest on Hurricane Milton. Milton is causing chaos all over florida. We just had 102 Mileperhour Wind Gust in sarasota. The backside of this storm has a stinging wind with it. And now, this whole entire region influiding saint petersburg, tampa, all under a Flash Flood Emergency. Those are issued when we know for a fact that we have water threatening lives. This is from an Emergency Managementic amount of rain. We have 16 inches of rain reported so far with the storm at saint petersburg. Between 8 00 and 9 00 p. M. , five inches of rain fell. That equals a one in One Thousand year event. That is how rare that is. So the storm is going to be tracking south of i4. Near orlando. You can see as we track over the last two hours, the center is now south here of tampa. Southeast of tampa. This is beginning to lighten up a little bit here in Pinellas County. And we will track this along i 4. It wont be the 16 inches. Could still get a foot of rain. Thats why we have the highest risk in that area. As far as the winds go, it is 450 miles from top to tail with tropical storm gusts. The Wind Field has really expanded. How about Daytona Beach . We will see significant Storm Surge of three to five feet here. Especially as we get toward the High Tide. Water issues, saint augustine, Daytona Beach. Oneandahalf million people without power. There is that 102 gust in sarasota. As far as Storage Surge goes, i have seen pictures. Venice, sarasota, all of those areas have Water Downtown now. Because the Storm Surge is currently at its max. Bill, sarasota seems to be the place where it is maybe hit the hardest. We have seen pictures of Stop Signs underwater. One report of ten foot of Storm Surge. So when you get ten feet of Storm Surge, and Wave Action on top of it, potentially on the second floor. And these are all Reports Lawrence from the inland areas. Right on the East Side of the bay. We are not talking about all these remote little Barrier Islands people evacuated from. We are Fear L of what that will look like at daybreak. Bill karins, thank you for that report. With the Hurricane Bearing down on florida today, the Stock Market closed once again at an alltime record high. Something that Donald Trump said would be impossible during a biden administration. He was wrong about that four years ago of course. Early voting begins in arizona. Vice president Ial Candidates were in Arizona Holding rallies across the state. Governor walz joined Arizona Congressman Rubin gallego and jim mccain. Son of the late senator John Mccain for a Campaign Rally in chandler, arizona. Our allies dont believe we can trust the former president. We are seeing it in ukraine, we are seeing it in other places. And what we found out yesterday, i think all of you are seeing this, that the former president has kept up a relationship with Vladimir Putin over the time. Now, this is one where the folks in this room understand. This is not anything that has happened before. Some of the things we are hearing from that, it makes my Blood Boil as a governor. Some of the most challenging times, were during covid. We were doing all we could to get testing and the equipment we needed to protect the people we were responsible for. And we were getting no help. Now we are finding out Vladimir Putin was getting the things we needed in minnesota to keep our people alive . Or the idea We Sat in the midst and i will say this. All of us in here know and i know it is very difficult. Some time this afternoon, Hurricane Milton is going to come ashore. And the commitment to stop the politicking and to unify to be there is absolutely critical. All of the governors are working together. I served as the cochair of the council of governors. Five republicans, Fiver Democrats to work together to share our resources in times of need. Whether it is a flood in minnesota. Hurricane in florida. Fire fighting in nevada. Those are the things we do together. When we have people coming out saying that before decisions were made on determining aid, former President Trump asked to see how those people voted. Never in our life would we ask that. Never in our lifetime would we ask that. Today, the kremlin confirmed what was first reported in Bob Woodwards new book, that Donald Trump sent vladimir Putin Covid Testing machines at the height of the Covid19 Pandemic in 2020. Bloomberg reports Quote Kremlin SpokesmanDmitry Peskov said the tests had been sent but denied the books claims that the two leaders had spoken by phone several times since trump left office. We also sent equipment at the beginning of the pandemic he said in a written response when asked about the book, but about the phone calls, it is not true. We will ask Bob Woodward about it monday night. Today, the Harris Campaign released this new 30second television ad. Trump will always choose putin over the american people. And now we have evidence. A new report he secretly sent Putin Covid tests. While withholding hem from sick and dying americans. So i said to my people, slow the testing down please who Will Trump look out for in his second term . I think i could have a very good president with president putin. Im not disavowing he told me im a genius. Its not you. Of course, Donald Trump called Vladimir Putin a genius on the day that Vladimir Putin invaded ukraine. Donald trump thought that invasion was in fact genius. Thats the word he used for it. In pennsylvania tonight, Liz Cheney and three former trump white House Staff members held an event in support of kamala harris. There are so many people in this country who are also going through things because of Donald Trump. Donald trump has mastered this ability to target and manipulate people. He targets these people and manipulates them and seduces them into his power and tells them he is the solution to their problems. Anoa this because i was once one of those people that really believed in him. I grew up in a family that was fairly disenfranchised by the government but felt that he could change things for us. I believed he could be that person. It was the compassion and the empathy and the forgiveness and the love that really brought me back and gave Me A Second Chance at life. It was looking at leaders like Liz Cheney and Jamie Raskin and nancy pelosi. President biden, Vice President harris who showed me. So many republicans and most of them are men. Who, you know, either made a decision that they could look the other way and that they could ignore what was happening or that they could lie about what was happening. And you know, when you come to a place as a country where you have one party that is dedicated to erasing the truth about the most serious attack on our capitol since the war of 1812, that party has lost its way. And those are not people that we can trust to lead us. So look, i think it is not only Donald Trump who has to be defeated op november 5th. But also those who have enabled him.
