This is going to be a catastrophic storm, it is going to be a potentially deadly storm. Florida prepares for landfall. This is going to be a punch to the base. Face. It evening from New York, at this moment, hurricane Miltons Landfall is imminent the hurricane is currently coming ashore, the eyewall is over Tampa Bay, floridas West Coast has already seen the impacts of milton which already ranks among the strongest alanna storms ever recorded and threatens to bring widespread discussion. Even before making landfall we are seeing dangerous records with over 100, one of those tornadoes in Fort Myers has already caused significant destruction as the storm progresses, life threatening a Storm Surges with up to 15 feet of water are expected we are already seeing wind in a 75 miles per hour and gusts even faster you can see Conditions Series enough to blow the windows out of highrises and causing widespread Power Outages. A Research Lab with the national oceanic administration shared this video from something called a Sale Drone in the Gulf Of Mexico its about 40 nautical myers miles from the storm up to 28 feet high, wind at 76 miles per hour that is the storm that is making its way toward Floridas Coast right now. Heres another view of that storm, Satellite View of milton near constant Lightning Activity for going flickering on the right side of your screen. The window to evacuate has now effectively closed, its now time to shelter in place, nearly 150 shelters open throughout the state. Sarasota counties have already reached capacity. Emergency services are already suspended across the area do to dangerous conditions. Residents will have to wait for the Wind And Flooding to subside before they can resume operations in the meantime the top priority should be Finding Shelter and staying safe. Joining us now is nbc News Meteorologist with the latest. What are we seeing . We are seeing a category three Hurricane Making Landfall in a very short time, we have an hour maybe a little more until the center of the system makes its way onshore,. We have it moving at a quick pace thats going to help you get across the state at a pretty fast pace we have things unfolding in a bad way across this region, notice how heavy this rain is Across Parts of the Tampa Bay area, when it comes to the heaviest of The Rain and the worst of the wind, those are on the north side, its probably going to come on shore probably somewhere north of sarasota, somewhere around there and its going to happen pretty quickly in the next maybe hour or so right now an extreme Wind Warning is in effect until 9 30 p. M. Across parts of this region. You should act as if there is a Tornado Happening in your area. The worst of the winds are coming into the Tampa Bay area as we speak. Look what happens here we have it just to the north of sarasota, that means this area from venice to sarasota, thats where we are going to look, nine to 13 feet that we have been expecting good news if you are in saint pete, you are probably going to escape the worst, doesnt look like its going to come onshore anywhere in the Tampa Bay mouth, unfortunately for folks, Sarasota And South is going to deal with the worst of that, it will maintain across the state and then we will have other implications on the backside of this with Storm Surge Potential for places like jacksonville. That starts one fold here as we get into tomorrow. This is only going to get worse here as we get closer to 5 00 a. M. , 6 00 a. M. Is high tide, Fort Myers already above three feet, four feet for naples, some of these places saw 13 to 14 feet. Likely these Barrier Islands places that were essentially washed away two years ago, we are going to see a similar situation. The wind going out of the bay, it pulls the water out. We often times see people standing in Tampa Bay, this is happened with ian, with irma, you want to do that. We can see how fast things unfold. And then we are talking about water going back into the bay, when it comes to the wind, notice some of these Wind Speeds already, 93 miles per hour in sarasota, over cp, thats why we have that extreme Wind Warning, even as far inward, 59 miles per hour. This is going to be the destructive winds closer to the center of it. The Power Outages and destruction is going to be across the state here as the day goes on and as the night goes on and we can into tomorrow, this is going to be something that we will watch on top of the fact, we have a whole lot of rain and more on the way we have seen immense tornadoes, we are going to go through at least 12 hours or so. According to our climate, the gusts are hitting the hurricane levels, right now we are in a little bit of a low. We have a lot of debris out in the streets less than two weeks ago, people ripped up their furniture, floorboards, picture frames, food, according to the governor only about 50 of the debris was able to be swept up even with a 24 seven operation from Barrier Islands, all of that now becomes projectiles which is very much of concern and it also could become a battering ram, the strongest winds, the most powerful Storm Surge already devastated so much of this community, the mayor in this community seem to be taking the storm differently and they prepared and evacuated with more urgency in the past and according to officials in this county they have almost 10,000 people at this point not even the Police And Sarasota are driving on the streets anymore. To the point of being on the right, that look at how that counterclockwise movement works and how it pushes that water. They are talking about a Storm Surge for that area as it comes in are you right by the water and have they dealt with a surge like that before . They have two large buildings and a little in that kind of looks like a Bell Tower right there in the middle, just beyond that is Sarasota Bay, im going to have the move over to the left now, you can kind of make out over the Tree Line there is a bridge off to the left. That is the causeway a Barrier Island Area here, waist high water, we were at a home earlier this week that had a waist high Water Line that area was blocked off by police earlier with a vehicle out there, that vehicle is not out there anymore, chris. Officials had cut off the Water Yesterday Evening trying to encourage people to get away we are just a couple blocks away from where the water would be pouring in. People who were here for helene less than two weeks ago i can also tell you down here the streets earlier just from some rain were partially flooded so you can imagine when you get more rain and the Storm Surge, what that could mean for this area and that is just talking about Property And Infrastructure that is not even getting into the potential Risk And Loss of life of people did not evacuate as much as we hoped they would. What is the Storm Surge, its this initial rush of water, three feet of water could be lifethreatening and as you start to move up to about six feet, you cannot drive, roads are washed out. You are going to have to basically youre stuck, theres nothing you can do, 10 feet maybe you can get to your second floor but if it continues to rise you are going to have to move into your attic and that is just a place where you do not want to be. Entire neighborhoods could be destroyed we saw that in helene and this Storm Surge could be worse than helene what we are looking at as far as the impacts, we are talking about major Wind Damage Highrise windows, cranes in tampa those could come down with Wind Gusts anywhere from 55 to 100 miles per hour around with the Power Lines and trees coming down widespread Power Outages and orlando and some of these outages could last for weeks, infrastructure is going to be a major, major issue. It is really coming down, how are you doing out there . We are doing okay, we had some shelter here but you can get a sense of just how strong these are, they have really deteriorated in the last half an hour, hour or so this is the strongest that weve seen, 60, 70 mile an hour gusts for sure and this torrential relentless rain, there has been some good news for the Tampa Bay area because the pass of the storm is south of here the incredible historic search they were concerned about may not happen but right now they are getting those Hurricane Force winds and it is a real concern for Emergency Officials also for the government who just gave a press conference, Ron Desantis telling people, do not leave, wherever you are right now stay in place, be smart, be safe, right now no one should be out in this certainly not driving and right now the winds are so extreme no one is going to be able to come and get you so really the most intensive portion of the storm right now in tampa, chris. To your point earlier as we are just looking at this extreme Wind Warning, the mother of all Nightmare Scenarios and what modelers have said would be the most explosive expensive possible is a Hurricane Hitting just to the point where it would essentially bring 10 or 16 foot Storm Surge to Tampa Bay, two days ago that was a genuine concern, that part looks like tampa is going to escape at least the worst of that, right . It does appear to be the case at this point although they are getting a lot of rain and it could be upwards of 12 inches of rain and a lot of Flash Flooding but for people who arent familiar with the geography of Tampa Bay, it is kind of like a culdesac and it is a highly populated Culde Sac with the base smack dab in the middle and it hasnt had a direct hit from a hurricane in a century and now you have many more people living here, it is built up across the coast. A real nightmare scenario. We were hit by Hurricane Ian trying to get back on their feet just people in this part of a florida are getting whacked over and over and over again. First, what you think the folks in fema and local Emergency Officials are planning right at this moment . Right now they are shutting down. Getting ready to do a Search And Restaurant rescue. As soon as the wind gets down where they can move safely, they are going to do their initial search. It looks like it will move relatively quickly through this evening, you see that track their, youve got experience from florida nationally. Rumors or misinformation or people not understanding something around natural disasters have been happening as long as there have been natural disasters in human society, i dont think that is new but it does feel to me like the potency and the inability to knock them down has more force now than it used to, what do you think . The Social Media and the role of influencers, almost every one of these lies is and about the people we are trying to help it is about the person making the lives, it is about Drawing Attention to them. This isnt just at a federal national level we are seeing this across the board where people are making a story about them, and other people who have lost their homes are about to lose their homes as we saw in helene, people had lost the familys businesses, entire communities. It is unconscious will that he would lead desperate people, to the point where the desperate people would not receive the aid to which they are entitled. Its not the people who got hit, they dont even have television. Our problem is getting them just to register. This is the audience it is being played to a nationally and its noise in the system. The fact that we cant even get in the area has really been a challenge. I just want to read again to reiterate this, the Fema Funding is good house democrats still think, or 60 house democrats signed a letter saying Emergency Funding for the future and there was recent legislation that is provided, the provisions fall critically short of what will be necessary to address the scale of Destruction And Recovery needs for fiscal year 2025, they are calling for johnson to call a session to pass the supplemental right now. It is great to have you, first i just want to give you an opportunity to tell us what you think people need to know about how fema is preparing and prepared to deal with Hurricane Milton. I just landed on the ground here in tallahassee and i am at the State Emergency center. I think the biggest thing that ive learned is that we had last night over 30,000 people that were being reported in shelters and they expect that number to be even higher which means people listen, people listen to the warnings and they evacuated. So that is really good news. We know that Hurricane Milton just made landfall. Many of these communities that were preparing for the worst still arent out of the woods. The majority of florida right now so you need to make sure that you are continuing to listen to your local officials and doing everything you can to protect yourself and your family maybe charge some of those phones up so you can continue to have communication if and when the power does go out but doing what you can to Stay Safe until this storm passes. The official count, over 1000 folks, 1400 a Search And Rescue personnel. Incident management teams, ambulances, helicopters, high water vehicles, tell me how things are going in western North Carolina which i think has been sort of off the charts in terms of the combination in the scale of destruction and the terrain making it difficult to just get roads utterly washed out. What we saw in western North Carolina is very different than what we see here when you look at the coast of florida, you can anticipate where the Storm Surge is going to be and really have a good idea of where the destruction is going to be. Were talking about how much Rain Is Falling the rate of The Rainfall and exactly where it falls in those valleys and haulers can create those deadly and immediate flash floods. They saw them move across western North Carolina almost two weeks ago now. It washed out and damage the water infrastructure, took down power but i was able to meet with the governor again today i have been with him most days and he gave an Update Today and there is a lot of progress. Some still have limited access but the power is being restored, waters being restored but theres definitely areas that have had the most impact, its still going to take some time. And it talks about some of the rumors, one of them, the governors own person, fema is blocking people in florida preventing evacuations this is false, how much is the Information Mattering for the kind of work that you do an Emergency Response . It matters tremendously because they are deliberately trying to create distrust and when you create that level of distrust it just makes it harder to get the services and the support that these people that have either are going to experience, like piercing with milton, or have experience across all of the other states from Hurricane Helene, makes it harder for them to get the resources that they need and they deserve. And so we have to make sure that we are using trusted messengers within the community to try to combat this information and so they dont feel like they cant reach out to their Government Agencies whether it is fema, whether it is state or local, that they are getting into the system and we can help them. It is also demoralizing for our own staff who have left their own families to come here and do what they know that they need to do and that is to help the people impacted by these storms. Final question for you an important one quickly, do you have the resources . Is there a Line Item Budget in the account that fema draws from to do what you need to do in the aftermath of milton on the heels of Helene Queck there is in the money in my budget to continue the Response Efforts for Hurricane Helene and milton but we are going to have to assess how much its going to put a drain on the to determine how much of my Recovery Projects i can continue to do across the nation so that i always have enough left to be able to respond to another storm because we are not out of Hurricane Season yet life from Fort Myers, sam, how are things looking there . You hear fort meyers, No Doubt people immediately go back to hurricane in a couple of years ago. Fort myers where we are, right near the river about 10 miles away from the Barrier Islands that are just sitting out there jutting out of the middle of the Gulf Of Mexico and truly when you talk about the most honorable residence in all of this, that is what we are talking about, Pine Island if that sounds very familiar that is because those are the talents that were literally cut off a couple of years ago and weve had in mind that officials here have been evacuating folks in Lee County where i am right now, 800,000 people in this county, 416,000 of them under mandatory evacuation. A lot of folks were heeding a warning because we do know that Lee County officials said earlier today that they went from 1600 people in shelters all the way up to almost 7000 by this afternoon so you can only hope that many people that were in Harms Way have moved out of it. A couple of notes right now it has been tropical Storm Forced Winds for a period of time. It has died down a little bit about a Half Dozen or so local governments they are no longer sending Emergency Responders to rescue people because the sustained wind, it appears to be going over right now in Charlotte County and manatee county, all of them tell us they are not doing them anymore. Something for folks to keep in mind but also the Storm Surge. They are in a major Flood Stage and they say its approaching five feet of Storm Surge there. Water rising near Times Square sort of the heartbeat of the area that just got absolutely decimated, you can see the water starting to reach the businesses that were literally just rebuilt, so many of these people as well, residence just a couple of weeks ago because of Hurricane Helene had to go through six feet of Storm Surge which is less than the projection here eight to 12 and found themselves in a scenario where water was still flooding, sewage was getting in their houses, some of them saying we are going to have to go through this process all over again. Were also talking to first responders, we had the Charlotte County sheriff on the top story about 10 to 15 minutes ago talking about the fact that he is not aware of any certain rescues right now but he has resources ready to go. Internet connectivity is going to be an issue. Youre going to hear many reports of folks with missing Loved Ones and they are going to try to pin that down in the days to come. They have recorded gusts as high as 95, 96 miles an hour in the last halfhour. Together with torrential rain, there has been 6 inches. Speaking to Bill Karins earlier, they are reporting two to three inches of rain an hour that will fall at that pace for another three to four hours. They are looking at a foot of rain in tampa. There may not be the surge that they had originally feared or anticipated, that is a lot of rain on a place already completely saturated from Hurricane Helene and already dealing with the damage out on the streets and in front of peoples houses.
