Welcome to The Beat. Warning against maga disinformation. Both candidates have been speaking out. We have more on the intersection of this humanitarian damager and the campaigns later this hour. While the latest reports indicate this volatile category 3 will double in size and make landfall in florida within hours. Experts caution it could end up being the worst such Weather Event in possibly a generation. I can give you a couple of factoids before we bring in our experts. Sustained Wind Speeds up to 130 miles per hour, projected 15foot Storm Surges in the worse spots, a foot and a half of rain in the densely populated Tampa Area is expected. And you can see fort myers, sarasota, tampa, all in the path, as it will barrel across the West Coast. You see that on your screen with the map of florida. Authorities have urged people to follow evacuation orders, which impacted over A Million people. And you can see folks making their way by car in traffic trying to respond to what the authorities and experts say is best for their and their families safety. Milton is moving closer to the West Coast of florida, thousands leaving in search of safety. Some resources have become harder to find. The national Weather Service has stated if you are watching this right now, 6 01 P. M. On the east coast, that the time to evacuate is now over. I repeat, the time for evacuating, for moving, is now over if youre in that affected areas. People who did not leave, if you are within the sound of my voice or any of the experts talking tonight, are being told to shelter in place. Now, crucial supplies have already started running low. Fuel shortages already reported by Gas Stations. Plus those tornado reports today. Theres one in broward county. And that, what youre seeing there, is still hundreds of miles away from what they call the core of milton. Its 9 00 a. M. Here in tampa and [ bleep ] is looking dicey to start. [ sirens ] this is the sheriffs office. You are in a mandatory evacuation zone. Please leave now. That is scary. Why is it bigger than florida . It looks horrible outside. Thats a tornado. Oh, my god. Two weeks since i evacuated for Hurricane Helene and we got the Orders Today for Hurricane Milton. Tide is rising very quickly. Very quick. Its not free to evacuate. Gas already high. The only Gas Station in town has gas. The worst of it will obviously be at, like, 2 00 a. M. Or so. You can see there people sharing their own experience, information online. There are more videos than ever. Theres also a very important need to be cautious about the information you get and what is increasingly a problem of disinformation and politicized material. We have more on that coming up. Right now i also want to show you President Biden speaking out about this storm. It is still expected to be one of the most and worst destructive hurricanes to hit florida in over a century. You know, both the heads of the national Hurricane Center and the national Weather Service made it very clear in conversations ive had with them earlier today, milton carries incredible destructiveness, can wipe out communities, can cause loss of life. Storm surge is still expected to be up to 13 feet. So, i urge everyone in Hurricane Miltons path to listen to local officials and follow all Safety Instructions they give. The president echoing and reinforcing what weve heard about following the experts and local authorities and being thoughtful about where you get information. Now we go to tampa, where Nbcs Marissa Parra is reporting. What is happening there . Reporter hey, ari. You can tell conditions here are getting pretty ugly here in tampa. Keep an eye on those trees behind me, which really allows you to see those wind gusts, which have been upwards of 50 miles an hour. We only expect that to increase as the night wears on. Everybody has been keeping a close eye on where exactly thats going to be, wondering how bad the Storm Surge will be, the threat upwards of 13 feet in some places. And remember this is an area that was already less vulnerable from Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago. We have all of that debris that we have been talking about, repeatedly, the efforts to remove all the Debris Left over. Were talking about peoples belongings, their prized positions now turned into projectiles, whether it is by wind or Storm Surge or flooding. You dont want that floating or somehow going into the air, into a window, causing even more damage. So, a lot of questions on what that can do. And when we talk about those around the Clock Efforts, we know that they were working 24 7. They were able to remove 50 of the debris from those Barrier Islands. But that 50 still remains. So, a lot of questions on that. We also have concerns about trains. Construction crews have these massive cranes that normally take weeks to set down and get them to a lower level. But of course that requires scheduling in advance. They were not able to do that. A lot of questions for what that means for residents who thought they were safe further inland, nowhere near the Storm Surge or the Flood Zone risks. But st. Petersburg put out a Notice Yesterday to the residents near those cranes saying, do not stay near your windows in case those cranes topple over. In so many ways, this monster of a storm, a threat from so many different directions for so many people because, ari, we were just talking about the evacuation efforts, how difficult it was for so many people to get the gas that they needed. They opened up an extra road, extra lane on the shoulder. The Gas Stations were running low on fuel. They went around the Clock Efforts to get them what they needed. But on top of all of that, the people who did evacuate, ari, are now telling me theyre facing tornado risks. So, the threat coming from all over all across the state. So, i just want to start off with something that caught our attention, there is a car just driving up toward a hotel behind us here. And just echoing what you were talking about, at this point the time to evacuate is over. Largely we have not seen cars out on the roads, which is good news. But i did just a short time ago see a vehicle heading off of one of the Barrier Islands here in sarasota. I also want to note that area, which has been Shut Down access had been Shut Down. Throughout the day we had seen a Police Car with lights flashing to prevent people from going onto the island. That Police Car is now gone. And im seeing a vehicle without any Kind Of lights indicating that its a first Responder Vehicle driving toward the barrier island, which to me is unfathomable at this point because weve got the estimated landfall timing moving up. We are in what is effectively the Bulls Eye right now. And just beyond those buildings behind me, that is sarasota bay. We are talking about more than ten feet of Storm Surge possible in this area. To echo what marissa was talking about with the debris piles, they had to stop collecting debris yesterday. The dump Shut Down ahead of the storm. Ive seen mattresses, pieces of wood, shattered glass, picture flames, envelopes, peoples lives on their lawns, and that trash has not fully been cleaned up. And all of that, i think, is the biggest variable beyond tracking where landfall and the worst surge will be. A big variable is what is going to be the impact of all the added debris in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. I want to have david pull out a little bit for a moment to give you an idea of what were doing differently for this storm. You can see were in a Parking Garage and were right up against a wall. This is a largely insulated parking ga rack. This is how we are going to be riding out the storm because of our own elevated concerns for debris in a way that we are not typically. Were always conscious and looking out for it and taking precautions, but were being that much more cautious because of our own Security Preparations around this landfall, which is sticking out for our team, as compared to others. Were still hours away, ari. But definitely a sense that were getting deteriorating conditions here right now. Appreciate that context. Glad to hear that the roads are mostly empty and you have the precautions for the whole team of colleagues there. Jesse kirsch monitoring this for everyone. Thank you. We turn to angie glassman, who can show us on the big board, on the map, what we see coming in tonight. A category 3, ari. Thats what were going to hold steady with. At this point it doesnt change the impacts a whole lot when it comes to Storm Surge, rainfall, the flooding concern. All of that is baked into the system here, as we landfall happening 9 00 to 11 00. Thats sped up a little bit because its moving at a pretty good clip. Still northeast at 15 miles per hour with winds at 120 miles per hour. With that latest track, update from the national Hurricane Center, We Saw a little bit of a nudge to the north. That means probably talking landfall somewhere around sarasota. Venice to st. Pete is, Kind Of, the eye we have of where we can exactly see that. This is going to make a big difference whether it comes in at the southern point of the Tampa Bay Mouth or right over st. Pete. That means the Storm Surge to the South Side of that system is where it will be the worst, and that is what were most concerned about. Make a note though, it also maintains Hurricane Status as it crosses the state. Wind damage is going to be immense across the state as well. Notice the models coming in, tightly packed. Were still going to see this general range as a category 3 hurricane as we get through the next couple of hours. When we talk about Storm Surge, youve been hearing us Say Over And over, we did see those numbers come down a touch. Does it matter . Not really. We had that system working with sheer, working with a cold front that has weakened it a little bit. But were dealing with the potential for nine to 13 feet of Storm Surge on the right side of where that eye comes on shore. Sarasota, venice beach, boca raton, all those places have potential for 13 feet Storm Surge. Midnight to 5 00 a. M. Is where well see the worst of it. High tide is expected at 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow for the Tampa Bay area. This system did grow in size. It is a strong, powerful, large system pushing that water up against parts of the West Coast of florida. The Wind Speeds have already started to ramp up. Notice st. Pete, sarasota, over 60 miles per hour. Weve even got brooksville over 60 miles per hour. Tropical Storm Force winds happening now in tampa as well. And these are only going to increase. The Hurricane Force winds are centered about 35 miles from the center of that eye from this hurricane. That is where the worst of it is. Those worse winds youre going to see on the northern side of the eye, the worst rain youre going to see on the northern side as well. Notice Sarasota Peak winds, 127 miles per hour. That is destructive to structures. This is going to knock out power across a chunk of the area. We do of course also have a tornado threat. This has been something ongoing, specifically for the eastern portions of the state. We have seen just, Kind Of, a prolific Tornado Event unfolding across this region. The Tornado Watch is going to go through 9 00 p. M. Tonight. There are still Tornado Warnings happening. Weve seen damage in melbourne. Unfortunately this is something were going to have to watch with the outer bands spiraling in for the next couple of hours and on top of that the Flash Flood Risk with rainfall amounts across central possible up to 18 inches possible. And listening to local experts nonpartisan information, Thats Part of keeping safe. We can also report tonight and were not going to wait on this, its happening now how these efforts are being harmed in real time by a Problem Weve seen in many other topics and areas in our lives here in our politics in america, and that is a higher level of misinformation, some of it politicized. At the briefing today, top fema officials said the agency is well funded, capitalized, and prepared for this storm. I want the people to hear it from me directly, fema is ready. Our agency is postured to respond to this storm and help the state of florida. Thats a little bit of the information from fema. And of course you can go online and, through credible sources, government websites or news sources, you could watch more of that. You can watch the President And Vice president today. You can hear from local officials. There are ways that it is clear you can get that direct information. Theres also a campaign going on. And while it is perfectly fair game for leaders in either party to discuss Government Incompetence or criticize the current administration, much of whats happening now, before this thing even hits landfall, before we know anything about how many people will actually be affected, whether tragedy will be unavoidable loss of life and other injuries, and how you would grade the future not yet happening government response, Donald Trump who has been caught lying more than any official in United States history, is jumping into this, turning a Real Life Natural Disaster into a chance to politic. And then from trump to the internet and back with Fox Amplifying it even more. Right now, storm ravaged residents are struggling to survive and begging for basics, like food and water. And fema is running low on funds because theyre blowing it all on illegals. You have Dhs Secretary Alejandro mayorkas saying fema is running out of money and going bankrupt. Bankrupt . This has not been a busy hurricane season. This after the fema directed more than 1 Billion to pay for Housing And Food for harrisbiden illegal immigrants . Now, if you look, this is one response that happened actually on fox. Fema is not broke, and there is not an issue, as you can see on the screen, of and this is Washington Post noting fox reported it quietly money for Storm Relief is not being drained by undocumented immigrants. Now, as with any piece of misinformation, there are the facts and then there is the public perception. And this has gotten to a Level And Youll notice this is different and happening really earlier and faster than in other natural disasters. But a sitting President And Vice president , who is, of course, running against Donald Trump, felt it was time and warranted to get ahead of this and address it in their remarks today. What just upsets me so is the idea that any politician would play political games with these folks, with people who are in the midst of such suffering, loss of life, loss of their homes, loss of normalcy, and then for the sake of political gain tell these lies in a way that is meant to make people distrust the help that is there for them to receive. Yeah. You can say Theres Nothing new about Spin And Exaggeration and lies in american politics. You could look back at how the Fema Response to past hurricanes has become a public debate and political issue. But this is different. These are lives happening before we even get a sense of how our fellow americans are impacted. So, thats where you go from the reporting, which we just did and i tried to give you clear information Up Front to the politics that are unavoidable to the point that even the president is warning people about this maga disinformation. In real time. In real time. Because the most dangerous thing you can say in America Today is, oh, No Ones going to believe that crap. Oh, yeah, they will believe it. They will believe it. The old joke from colbert is the problem is truth has a wellknown leftwing bias. Right. That was his joke. There is all types of disinfo. You know how i try to be fair right. I mention theres a history of exaggeration in politics. But do you notice and why is it, as a political expert, can you tell us that so much of the antiscience misinfo in a Trump Party that has been bred and acculturated that they dont care whats true. Colbert is a great man. A greater man, mark twain, who said the lie can go around the world two times before the truth gets out there. They have a propensity to believe anything that comes out. Look at the misinformation that came out during the pandemic. So theyre softened up. Yes. The only way to deal with it is you have to be up on it and you have to get ahead of it. And you have to do these Press Briefings every morning. And mitch should say, Call Fox and say, i want you to know, im available to go on any show you want me on. And if you have any theory, im happy to answer it. You mentioned fox, and we have an actual psa up, because we have viewers around the country. We are telling everyone to be careful. I am going to show something that is false that was questioned on fox. But i want people to understand, thats what youre about to see, a false report from a trump ally, aide, lawyer, and a little bit of light pushback. Take a look. There are babies floating in the water, and were on podcasts. Thats what the Harris Team is doing. I think what cedrics doing is completely irresponsible. Where do you see that report of a baby floating in the water . We have absolutely heard there are children floating there are missing bodies, dead people. We know that. Up to 200 32. Thank you. Well, shes not right yet, but there will be dead people floating out there because the mayor said of tampa, hes saying you will die. Theres a good chance you will. And No One is going to come to get you because theyre going to be very busy. Thats true. And one more point about this storm. Its now a category 3. Katrina that hit new orleans, John Berry told me he believes it was either a weak 2 or strong 1. But because it was a 5, it built up an enormous wall of water. So, if youre in that area, if youre in southwest florida, centralwest florida, dont take a lot of so lass in the fact it dropped from a 5 to a 3. Because that water is coming at you hard. Do you see any potential desperation here in the sense of they need to find narratives to attack the Bidenharris Administration because theyre worried . Its incredibly tight race in key states. We saw what happened in north carolina, where a conservative republican congressman said all this stuff youre hearing is just not true. Youre going to hear more of this. It is inevitable. Theyre already starting. How can you have an event like this that just happens. Somebody is doing this, some democrat is controlling something. And thats why i think its essential that you deal with this in real time. Real time. We got a little more from the documentary. We deal with the serious here its been a serious day in america. And everyone, again, is trying to get prepared and hope for the best while preparing for the worst. This documentary goes all the way from the old School Stuff we showed all the way up to this year. Im told i have not been able to screen the whole thing. But researchers say we see you gearing up to do television. And boy, what a year. I know you are close with top democrats. I know you and President Biden have a long relationship. Fair to say . I like him. He was a good person. No doubt about it. I know that the White House listening to you. And we went through debates over bidens position, over the debate. You had the switch. You were one of the gurus. I dont know if these if any one person, you, pelosi, does anything. If theres a list of top dems, youre one of them. It shows you working tv, msnbc, all of it. Lets take one more look at the doc. I dont think were going to get any closer than this. So, youre really probably under 20 days that you have to really get a message out. They need to be sharp. They need to be aggressive. They need to stop answering questions and start asking questions. Theyre doing all this and sitting down with 60 minutes and sitting down with colbert and sitting down no matter what, if i come on your show, you ask the questions. If i have a press conference, i get to ask the questions. Youd like to see her do more Press Conferences . Where shes out saying, what is j. D. Vance talking about that trump saved obamacare. He probably destroyed every point. I would put president obama out to make that. He only has a 92 approval with democrats. He only is the author, the father, of 23 Million people having insurance. I would have president clinton talking, going on these local Tv Stations talking about how are going to destroy the economy of wisconsin or michigan or anywhere else because they have never worked. But were just letting that go. And i think she and the whole campaign needs to be much more aggressive and much less passive than they are. Just Take A Look at something you were right in the center of and ultimately left fox. I want to look back to that 2020 election period. Take a look. American votes in a president ial election are actually counted in a foreign country. These are serious allegations. Their machines caused thousands of votes in one Michigan County to be switched from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. This is an extremely flammable situation and the president just threw a match into it. He hasnt won these states. Do you still question whether or not Joe Biden won the election fair and square . Chris, i stand by my vote to object on january 6th. Congressman, you Say Anything that distracts from that . Major lawsuit. The settlement to be paid by Fox News, roughly 787. 5 million. How did you approach your role then . And was fox wrong to air so much material that amounted to, at times, Election Misinformation . Well, the way i handled my job then is the way i handled it during a half century in the business. And, you know, its funny, ari, because i get praised a lot. People come up to me and say, i really appreciate how even handed you are, how fair you are. And i started at the Boston Globe in 1969. And being fair, being even handed, wasnt an object of praise. Its what kept you from getting fired. Its like being accurate, spelling Somebodys Name right, getting the address right. And the fact that it is to a certain degree that i have gotten praise or stood out for doing that, to me, is Kind Of depressing. You know, i think its a bad commentary about our business and how it has changed over the years. I understand that. I have someone who worked in fox not praising you, and we only learned about this from private text messages. And as a longtime reporter, you know how this works. So, Thats Part of my response. You know, look, i had a very good 18year run at fox, and they never messed with me the whole time. You know, as you can see from some of those reports, i asked tough questions. I booked the toughest guests. And i never got second guessed by the Executive Floor at fox. I sensed a change in fox, as time went on, particularly after the 2020 election, particularly after we correctly but were the first to call arizona on Election Night in 2020. And the Trump Campaign was very upset with us. A lot of trump supporters were very upset with us. And they began going to other news avenues, like newsmax that were even further at that point. I sensed a change that there was less interest even in the News Side in sticking to the facts, sticking to the truth, and more in telling that audience to try to win them back what they wanted to hear. And they paid a big price for it. You know, you talked about the misinformation about the elections. You know, i have to say im not unhappy that fox had to pay 787 Million because there ought to be a price to pay when you dont Tell The Truth and you deliberately misinform people about things that the evidence in that case showed that higher ups at fox knew wasnt true. You thought the hefty penalty was a good thing for trying to correct some of their mistakes . Look, theres a price to pay. You know, there are laws about libel and defamation. And clearly fox settled because they thought they were going to lose the case and have to pay even more. Fascinating. You have interviewed seven President S. Theres no automatic Sunday Show dispensation. You have to earn every one of those interviews through your work, efforts, reputation. So, i want to look at one that i think you remember made a splash at the time. Bill clinton, who served as president , going back and forth with you about national Security And Bin laden, important, heavy stuff. For those who dont remember, lets Take A Look at that. Why didnt you do more to put Bin Laden and Al Quaeda out of business when you were president . Im being asked this on the fox network. You did foxs bidding on the show. You did your nice little conservative Hit Job on me. What i want to know sir, im asking a question. You dont think thats a legitimate question . It was a perfectly legitimate question. I want to know how many people in the Bush Administration you asked this question of. Have you ever watched Fox News sunday, sir . I dont believe you asked them that. We ask plenty of questions educate us about how you approached that, how it feels in the moment. He was alleging that you were somehow biassed and that you were raising things in a political manner or feeding the audience so he would repeat back a political view of things. You had a back and forth. Youve done that with more than one president. Tell us about it. Well, it was a pretty memorable interview. If you go on youtube, last time i checked, which was a number of years ago, there were 10 Million views. You know, to put it in context, there had just been a Dock Ewe Drama on abc called the path to 9 11, and they had been very critical of Bill Clinton and a Pulitzer Prize winning book called The Looming Tower that were critical of clinton and said he hadnt done enough to put Bin Laden and Al Quaeda out of business. I simply asked him a question. Thats what we do for a living. I later asked Terry Mckol of, have you seen him fly off like that . We call that the purple rage in the White House. Did you feel anything in the moment . Did you feel something that then you had to screen to be professional . Or youve done this so much it was just one more day . Well, no, i mean it wasnt just another interview when youre getting called out even though he was the former, not the current president of the United States. But, look, you could put up clips of me with Donald Trump in 2020 sure. When i talked to him about the cognitive test. And i said, you know, you talked about the fact you aced it. It wasnt so hard, mr. President. They have a picture of an animal, and you have to identify it as an elephant. Thats what we do for a living. And, you know, were there to seek the truth, to seek heat, not rather light, not heat. And not to make friends. People can get it wherever books are sold. Chris, what interested you about this 1960 race, and what echo or apply today . Well, i two things, ari. First of all, its a great story. I think it was, Kind Of, a key Inflection Point in american politics, maybe the first modern election, first two candidates for president who had been both born in the 20th century, first debate, first television debate, youngest president ever elected, First Catholic Elected president. You know, its just a fascinating story. But one of the other things that interested me about it was its relevance to where we are in politics today. Thats why i wanted to come out just before this election. There was certainly an indication im not going to say definitely. But there certainly was evidence of vote fraud. Its an election that may have been stolen by the democrats for John Kennedy. And Richard Nixon had to make a decision as to whether or not he was going to contest it a lot. A lot of pressure inside his party to fight it. It was the height of the cold war. He didnt think that the country could stand not knowing who the president was for weeks or months, as it went through the courts. He was also only 47 years himself, and he wanted to have a political future, not be seen as a sore loser. And he actually on january 6th, 1961, presided over the counting of the electoral votes and declared John Kennedy was the winner. It was the first time in 100 years had to basically certify his defeat and his Opponents Victory as president. It couldnt be more different from 2020 and what were seeing even into 2024 with Donald Trump, no evidence, no substantial evidence of election fraud. And for four years Donald Trump has held us captive in this idea that he actually won the election and Joe Biden didnt. Now i have about 70 seconds left. Anything you learned about either the figures here, either of the candidates, you didnt know before you wrote this book . Oh, a tremendous amount about both of them. One of the things that came out of the book was how crooked the democratic machine was and the kennedys. To give you one quick example, the Archdiocese Of Boston obviously kennedy was a massachusetts obviously, kennedy was a massachusetts senator. When they got all the collection from people who went to church on sunday, he gave it to joe kennedy. Joe kennedy then covered that. Sending a check and also getting a big Tax Deduction back to the church. He then took that money and gave it to the mob whether or not fronted a round of sheriffs and local officials and even protestant preachers in West Virginia. And at The End he told somebody it was good for the church, it was good for the preachers in West Virginia and it was good for the candidate. One other thing, kennedy was in a Kind Of Love Quad Angle with frank is a gnat ta, the head of the Chicago Mob and Party Girl named judith campbell, during the height of the 1960 president ial campaign. So its a fascinating personal and political story and as i say, real relevance to 2020 and 2024. All fascinating. So chris, will you come back on next week and every week until the election . We have people from the department of transportation, the department of defense, the Army Corps of engineer, the small business administration, health and human services, the president , President Biden, Vice President harris, have directed us, not only the department of homeland security, with fema in the lead but also the entire administration to bring the full weight and capabilities of our resources across the enterprise. And that is indeed, what we are doing in support of the state and local officials. For people waking up tomorrow in the region, either sheltering in place or those who have evacuated, what can you advise, based on what you currently know, about what they should be doing what they can expect tomorrow . I think were going to see, by all indications, a significant amount of damage. What they need to do is follow the guidance of local officials. That is absolutely vital. In the last continuing Resolution Fema got about 20 billion. When you see these allegations or reports that somehow theres insufficient Funding Or Funding has been sent off to other priorities that has come up, as you know, in the debate here in these last few days, your response . Absolutely false. And knowingly false. We have seen false assertions that Fema Money has been diverted to care for migrants. That is false. We have seen false information that federal employees who are there to help survivors, that they are actually going to be taking survivors land. That is false. And it has an incredibly, incredibly damaging impact. We are seeing survivors reluctant to request the assistance that they need and to which they are entitled out of fear by reason of this false information.
