You. They dont know what makes you tick. And why do you think that is . Whats the disconnect . Its an election, bill. And i take it seriously that i have to earn everyones vote. This is an election for president of the united states. No one should be able to take for granted that they can just declare themselves a candidate and automatically receive support. You have to earn it, and thats what i intend to do. That was part of Vice PresidentKamala Harris Interview with 60 minutes Last Night. Well have much more from that wide ranging sit down in just a moment. Also ahead, the very latest on Hurricane Milton, which is intensifying in the gulf. Its now a potentially catastrophic category 5 storm headed towards western florida. And it comes as Donald Trump continues to lie about Hurricane Helene Recovery efforts, drawing more criticism from federal officials as well as Vice President harris. Good morning, and welcome to Way Too Early on this tuesday, october 8th. We are now exactly four weeks until election day. Four weeks. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. We have a lot to get to this morning and well begin with the race to the White House with 28 days until election day. Last night cbs aired its 60 Minutes Interview with Vice PresidentKamala Harris. Its interviewed president s since way back in 1968. She was pressed on a number of issues including or Immigration Policies and her economic proposals. But there was an historic flood of undocumented immigrants come across the border the first three years of your administration. As a matter of fact, arrivals quadrupled from the last year of President Trump. Was it a mistake to loosen the Immigration Policies as much as you did . Its a longstanding problem, and solutions are at hand. And from Day One literally we have been offering solutions. What i was asking was was it a mistake to kind of allow that flood to happen in the first place . I think the policies that we have been proposing are about fixing a problem, not promoting a problem, okay . But the numbers did quadruple. And the Numbers Today because of what we have done, we have cut the flow of illegal immigration by half. Should identify have done that we have cut the flow of fentanyl by half, but we need congress to be able to act to actually fix the problem. Pardon me, madam Vice President , the question was how are you going to pay for it . Well, one of the things im going to make sure that the richest among us who can afford it pay their fair share in taxes. It is not right that teachers and nurses and firefighters are paying a higher Tax Rate than billionaires and the biggest corporations. And i plan on making that fair. But were dealing with the real world here. But the real world includes how are you going to get this through congress . You know, when you talk quietly with a lot of folks in congress they know exactly what im talking about because their constituents know exactly what im talking about. Their constituents are those firefighters and teachers and nurses. Their constituents are middle class hardworking folk. You are sitting here with us. The Trump Campaign canceled an interview that they had agreed to, to participate in this broadcast. What do you make of that . If he is not going to give your viewers the ability to have meaningful, thoughtful Conversation And Question and answer with you, then to watch his rallies. Youre going to hear conversations that are about himself and all of his personal grievances. And what you will not hear is anything about you, the listener. You will not hear about how hes going to try to bring the country together, find common ground. And bill, that is why i believe in my soul and heart, the american people are ready to turn the page. Before that interview with the Vice President aired Last Night, 60 minutes began with a note about trump backing out of his interview. Heres part of their explanation. Its been a tradition for more than half a century that the major party candidates for president sit down with 60 minutes in october. In 1968 it was Richard Nixon and hubert humphrey. This year, Vice PresidentKamala Harris and former President Donald Trump accepted our invitation. But, unfortunately, last Week Trump canceled. The campaign offered shifting explanations. First, it complained that we would factcheck the interview. We factcheck every story. Later, trump said he needed an apology for his interview in 2020. Trump claims Correspondent Leslie Stahl said in that interview that hunter bidens controversial laptop came from russia. She never said that. Trump has said his opponent doesnt do interviews because she cant handle them. He had previously declined another debate with harris, so tonight may have been the largest audience for the candidates between now and election day. Donald trump also yesterday said that migrants convicted of murder have, quote, bad genes. The former president made that baseless claim on a conservative Radio Talk Show yesterday while complaining about the Bidenharris Administration Border policies, Incited A misleading statistic about the rate of crime connected to migrants. Lets take a listen. How about allowing people to come to an open border 13,000 of which were murderers, many of them murdered far more than one person and theyre now happily living in the united states. Murderers, i believe this, its in their genes, and weve got a lot of bad genes in our country right now. Trump sighing that during an interview with hugh hewitt, a conservative radio host. One called it, quote, misleading, explaining the 13,000 number includes people that entered the country over the past 40 years or more including during trumps pregnancy and also includes many who are currently incarcerated. The White House slammed trump calling his rhetoric, hateful, disgusting, and inappropriate. Comparing it to trumps past statements that migrants are poisoning the blood of the country. A Trump Campaign spokesperson fired back claiming that trump was, quote, clearly referring to murderers, not migrants. Joining us now Associate Professor of Political Science at fordham university, christina greer. Good to see you this morning. Lets start right there. It seems to be the latest in a long line of hateful, racist comments from Donald Trump about migrants. This one, though, particularly galling. How do you think itll resonate . Well, we know, jonathan good morning, first of all. His supporters are unmoved by the racism. He came down that gold plated escalator when he first ran for the presidency and said that mexicans were rapists and criminals. And so if youve been ignoring all of his racist statements for these past few years, you havent been paying attention to Donald Trump. Now hes getting a lot more nervous about november 5th, were going to see him ramp up the divisive and racist and xenophobic language just to Gin Up Support with his base. Its a sad day for American Politics. Its been a sad day for American Politics ever since Donald Trump was elected because this type of division of america is taking us back, literally as the slogan promises, decades if not centuries. Professor, you certainly understand the need for public forums in the height of a campaign, debates looks like were only going to get one between Trump And Harris as well as high Profile Interviews and the Vice President has several slaeted for later today. I want to get your thoughts what you heard during the 60 Minutes Interview. First, the idea what she said how she answered his questions about migrants and other policies including economic ones, but also the idea that Donald Trump at the last minute pulled out with the primary reason being he didnt want to be factchecked. Right. We have to remember this runway for Kamala Harris has been incredibly short. Dont forget it wasnt until july that she, you know, was was nominated by Joe Biden or suggested to be the nominee by Joe Biden, and it wasnt until a month later in august. August was just, you know, a few weeks ago. So its been a truncated campaign. She had to introduce herself to many americans. And sadly Donald Trump has repeated she hasnt given interviews, and thats become some sort of factual statement, which absolutely is not. We know Donald Trump has been decreasing his rallies and definitely decreasing mainstream meetings, only going to the sycophanttype media because of his cognitive decline. And jonathan, we cannot deny that this 78yearold lately has just been spiraling downward. Every accusation is a confession in many ways. And he has no plan and no policy other than lets keep these people out of our country. But there is no vision for the country. So i could see why he would decline 60 minutes with hardhitting thoughtful questions about the future of america, which has not been the focus of his campaign or a priority whatsoever. Professor, lastly and briefly, The New York Times did an important story the last couple of days looking at trumps ret rrk, examining the questions around his age, the same Questions President biden faced so long during this campaign. Do you think theres more on appropriate balance, if you will, in the Media Coverage of this candidate who would be an elected president . No, we have to do better. Were just now saying trumps comments are racist. Were just now tiptoeing to the edge of saying this is unacceptable. Sadly, we have less than a month to go, but its a crucial point for american democracy, and i hope the media really understands what has been saying and what he definitely does mean, especially when he made comments about good genes. He said that before, now hes making it a lot more explicit. And you certainly called him out correctly. Professor, good to see you. Thank you. Up next well turn to Hurricane Milton as it barrels towards florida. And speaks with about Recovery Efforts. Plus Donald Trump continues to push misinformation about the federal Governments Response to Hurricane Helene. Those stories and the latest on the path and timing of what could be a very dangerous hurricane when we come right back. Dangerous rrhuicane when we come right back well would you look at that . Jerry, youve got to see this. Ive seen it. Trust me, after 15 walks, it gets a little old. Ugh. I really should be retired by now. Wish id invested when i had the chance. To the moon unbelievable. Stop waiting. Start investing. E trade ® from morgan stanley. Why choose a mobile network E Trade ® built for places youll probably never be. Instead of for where you are most of the time . Xfinity mobile was designed for where you need it most. Xfinity internet customers, ask how to get a free 5g Phone and a second unlimited line free for a year. Welcome back. Nearly two weeks after Hurricane Helene slammed parts of florida, republican governor Ron Desantis is reportedly refusing to take a Phone Call from Vice President harris regarding relief and recovery. In addition to preparedness ahead of the approaching Hurricane Milton. A Desantis Aide told Nbc News the governor was avoiding Harris Call because it, quote, seemed political. Adding, kamala was trying to reach out, and we didnt answer. But desantis flat out denied he refused to take Harris Call when asked during a News Conference yesterday. I didnt know that she had called, so im not sure who they called. They didnt call me. And their characterization of it was something that they did, Wasnt Anything that anybody in my office did in terms of saying that it was political. Later in the day the Vice President addressed that Report Head on. You know, moments of crisis if nothing else, should really be a moment that anyone who calls themselves a leader says theyre going to put politics aside and put the people first. People are in desperate need of support right now, and playing political games at this moment in these crisis situations, these are the height of emergency situations, its just utterly irresponsible. And it is selfish, and it is about political gamesmanship. Instead of doing the job that you took an oath to do, which is to put the people first. Desantis then responded to that later on Fox News accusing harris of trying to politicize the storm. Meanwhile, the White House issued a statement Last Night that President Biden had finally spoken to governor desantis about Hurricanes Helene and milton. Meanwhile, former President Trump continues to lie about the federal Governments Response to helene. Talk about politicizing a storm. In a Fox News interview that was taped on saturday but aired Last Night, trump again claimed that there are no Emergency Workers on the ground in Hard Hit Areas including western North Carolina. Then at an event Last Night he again ripped the Governments Response calling an amazing period of time for those impacted by the storm. How would you do it differently . Id have a tremendous team of people here. They dont have any people here. I was in North Carolina yesterday, i was in georgia. And georgia is different. You have a good governor. Hes doing have a very good job, but North Carolina is a disaster, and it was also hit very hard. But they dont have the people. And theyre complaining theres no people around to help. That was a horrific storm much worse, and, you know, late in the season you wouldnt think a thing like that could happen. You look at georgia and alabama and tennessee and South Carolina and florida, its amazing. This has been an amazing period of time, but the response has been very weak, unbelievably weak. Nobodys ever seen such a weak response. Most of that, of course, not true. And in response to trumps repeated lies, Vice PresidentKamala Harris slammed the former President Yesterday while speaking to reporters at joint base andrews. Theres a lot of Misand Disinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, in particular to the survivors of helene. And, first of all, its extraordinarily irresponsible. Its about him. Its not about you. And the reality is that fema has so many resources that are available to folks who desperately need them. Next up here well turn to sports and bring you a recap of another day of thrilling playoff baseball. Meanwhile, in the nfl the defending champs keep on rolling. Well have those highlights and bring you the very latest on Hurricane Milton as It Churns in the warm waters of the gulf on a path for floridas western coast. Well be right back with that important information. Back wit important information. Trying to get one on the road before they return to detroit. Goes, pitches, a high Fly Ball to right field. This one is going to fly Kerry Carpenter breaks a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth with that stunning homer out to right field. In part stunning because it came after the guardians closer whos basically been unhittable all yearlong. But the tigers beat cleveland 30, and even the best of five Al Division series at one game apiece. The teams now travel to detroit for game three tomorrow afternoon. Meanwhile, in the Bronx Salva Perez hit off the fourth inning with that solo Home Run that sparked a four Run Rally against carlos rendone. Royals held the yankees down from there leading 42. They get the split in the bronx, that series 11. Game three Tomorrow Night in Kansas City. All four Division Series have now opened at 11 for the first time since that round started play back in 1995. That is great stuff. National League Teams take the field again later today in a pair of game three matchups. Phillies at mets at 5 00 and then dodgers at padres at 9 00 eastern. We turn now to the nfl and the Kansas City chiefs hosted the new orleans saints Last Night on Monday Night football. Chiefs Qb PatchwalkPatrick Mahomes and Kareem Hunt rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. They pulled him off the Scrap Heap two weeks ago, here he goes for 100 yards and the two time defending champs improve to 50. They chiefs won them. The wnba playoffs resume tonight in minneapolis. The Minnesota Lynx Host the Connecticut Sun in the decisive game five of their series. The winner will go onto face the new York Liberty for the title. Time now for the weather and lets go to meteorologist michelle grossman, whos tracking the path of Hurricane Milton, which is now a powerful category 4 storm, i believe, michelle. And i know a lot of warnings, this one might be one of the most intense storms ever as it barrels down on florida. Yeah. Hi there, jonathan. This is going to be one for the record books for sure. Were just 44 hours away from landfall. Were looking at a potentially catastrophic, potentially life threatening storm as it makes landfall later wednesday into thursday. Right now looking around 2 00 a. M. Thursday, but that will change probably a little bit as we go throughout the next 40 plus hours. So lets look at the latest because we are looking at a very, very strong storm. 155 miles per Hour Category 4 storm. We expect this to stay a category 4 storm at least over the next 24 hours as its really warm, that is the fuel this storm needs. Throughout the day were looking at that category 4 storm. And then as it makes landfall, we expect it to be a major hurricane with winds up to 100 miles per hour in some spots. Remember theres still lots of debris from helene. That is going to cause some problems. Rainfall of 15 inches. As a result we have tropical alerts extending from the carolinas all the way to the keys. A Hurricane Warning for tampa, down to portions of near southern florida, and take a look at some of these numbers. This is storm surge. This is the deadliest part of a tropical system. 15 feet in some spots. Thats where were looking at that saltwater moving over dry land. That is unurvivable. So you need to heed any Evacuation Warnings in place and were look at 18 inches in some spots. This is going to be a tough one for many. You need to heed the warnings. We have 44 hours to go, maybe a little bit more, maybe a little less, buts one to to watch over the next day or so. We cannot underscore enough heed the warnings, evacuate if told. And well have complete coverage of the storm over the next couple of days. Michelle grossman, Thank You so much. Next up here Donald Trump is facing criticism for smiling while holding a poster of a man who was kidnapped by hamas on October 7th. Well take a look at that and how the former president commemorated the attack on yesterday, which of course was the Oneyear Anniversary of the October 7th terror in israel. Well be right back. October 7th terror in israel well be right back. At harbor freight, we design and test our own tools. And sell them directly to you. No middleman. Whatever you do, do it for less at harbor freight. Save even more at our Parking Lot Sale this weekend. welcome back to Way Too Early. It is 5 30 a. M. Here on the east coast, 2 30 out west on this tuesday morning. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for being with us. President Joe Biden spoke with the israeli president by phone yesterday, their talk, of course, coming on the Oneyear Anniversary of the Hamas Terror Attack on israel. President biden reaffirmed Americas Support for the jewish state. He expressed his condolences to the families of those killed on October 7th and expressed sadness for the loss of innocent life in gaza as a result of a War Hamas started. In afternoon President Biden participated in a candlelighting at the White House in remembrance of the victims of October 7th. Meanwhile, trump commemorated the anniversary by visiting a Holy Jewish site here in new york city. The former president went to the grave of an influential Orthodox Rabbi who passed away in 1994. While there, he spoke to members of the community and took pictures including this one, in which trump is seen smiling while holding a Kidnap Poster of a man who was taken hostage by hamas last year. Tonedeaf there. The Gop Nominee also offered to sign a prayer book. We can take a look at that awkward exchange. Would you like me to sign this . Well, there you go. Joining us now israeli journalist, the author of the new book 10 7, 100 human stories. A powerful read about those lost on October 7th. Yesterday a hard day for many people. You certainly write about those who are impacted by the terror attack, those who survived, those who were kidnapped, and those who lost a loved one. Tell us more about what you think that day means for that nation. You know, its such a Heart Breaking first anniversary especially because so many israelis are reliving these day of 10 7 ever since, every day in the last year people are still mourning their death. People are still waiting for the hostages. We still have 100 people held in captivity. And you know the hypocrisy of the israeli government now investing so much Energy And Effort in this events in commemorating whether they can still do something to save so many of these people. Estimates are that half of the hostages in gaza are still alive. We just we dont just need to remember them. We can actually save them and bring them back home. So, of course, this wasnt just a oneday event, as you say. There are hostages whose fate still hangs in the balance, and then since that day, israel has been at war at war with hamas and gaza. And now fighting with hezbollah in lebanon and iran, launching missiles at israel. We now know the world awaits what israels response will be. An Opinion Piece bears this headline. We are dying in fear. A lost Squeneration Israeli and palestinian born into unrelenting violence. Tell us about that that sense there in the region, people youve spoken to who each and every day knows not what violence lies ahead. Right. You know, i come from the younger generation of israelis that not many people know, but 50 of the israelis are 30 years old or younger. That means we are all born after the murder of Prime Minister and the murder of and the oslo accords. The people fighting his war have never lived in a time for peace. Weve been told this will be the situation forever. Netanyahu is saying 17 years now in power that this conflict between israelis and Palestinians Cant be end but only can be managed. We see so many israelis in the streets now asking for a hostage deal, asking to go to elections. And i really hope that my generation after this war will act for a different future for all of us. All of us deserve much better than this. Israeli journalist lee yaron, Thank You. We really appreciate your perspective this morning. Thank you so much for having me. Next up here well go live to our friends at cnbc for an early look whats driving the day on Wall Street after the dow dropped nearly 400 points. Former President Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania And Elon musk joined hill on stage. It was exciting for all the trump supporters because for the first time they got to see an actual billionaire. During the Rally Trump praised Elon Musk for phrasing free speech with X And Elon praised trump for making truth social so bad that people still use x. Elon campaigned alongside trump for the first time and thee really made quite the entrance. Take a look at this. The only reason we can now send america that is the reason you dont give kids mountain dew. And there you have it. Time now for business. Lets bring in Cnbcs Arabile gumede. Arabile joins us live from london. Good to see you. Stock futures lower this morning following what was a losing day on Wall Street. Whats the sense of where the market could go today . Yeah, so were seeing a little bit of Market Pressure come to the fore then. Youre also seeing Treasury Yields and bonds move higher. The ten Year Treasury Past 4 , the first time in around two months thats happened. Its a significant Pressure Point because it leads onto what we saw last week and those Job Numbers that came out exceeding the Market Play and what the market had anticipated, meaning the fed might not cut Interest Rates as quickly as the market anticipated. That does mean there could be pressure at play then. The market still looking towards that. Obviously Cpi Or InflationNumber Setout for this week. Plus we have the old risk of that election as well later on in the year. Still so much at play, but for now the market seems to be in a bit of a cautious stance. All right. So the latest Employment Data has really eased fears of a possible recession. Tell us more about that. Yeah, it certainly has. This is why Goldman Sachs has gone onto say, well, they actually see Growth Dropping becoming even better over the next couple of months in fact as well. Goldman has cut the chance of a u. S. Recession to 15 . That was previously around 25 . And that was really significant for them to do then. Theyre also saying theyre going to see Unemployment Dip to 4. 1 , of course, then. The latest Employment Data, ultimately eased Recession Fears for the market. And they felt like were going to get to what is called this Goldilocks Situation then where you actually are able to bring down Interest Rates or inflation as much as possible and cut those Interest Rates as they were, but maintain that Growth Level as well as unemployment at around 4 . So, yeah, for now it seems Goldman Sachs agrees with the fed saying that thing said are still good in the u. S. Economy. That soft landing within sight. So lastly a federal judge has ordered google to make it easier for developers of app stores to compete on android phones. What impact could this have on the Tech Industry writ large . Well, one things for sure, right . What kind of happens right now then, john, is that if youre looking for an app you either get it right now on ios or on Apple Store or perhaps get it on the android play store. But thats about to change ultimately, and thats what this whole Court Case is about. Epic games is saying ultimately wed love to actually be able to allow users to get these games but not necessarily on any of these stores, specifically not necessarily on the android play store. And if that is necessarily them doing that, then ultimately means theyre putting forward a monopolistic behavior. Now, the judge ruled that, indeed, android was using a monopolistic behavior in this case, then ultimately took that away and said theyre not allowed to actually have that. Which means epic could allow itself to have users download their games through their own servers and not necessarily through the play store. So it means a lot of changes could happen in terms of settings, and financial purview and many things could be at play here. Cnbcs Arabile Gumede live from london, Thank You as always. Next up here House SpeakerMike Johnson is touting Donald Trumps unpredictability when it comes to foreign policy. Thats allegedly an asset. Democratic Congressman Jake Auchincloss of massachusetts, hell weigh in on what he thinks when he joins the next next on Way Too Early. When he joins tn Way Too Early. Xfinity internet customers, ask how to get a free 5g Phone and a second unlimited line free for a year. You could say a lot of things about donald j. Trump, but what no one could say is hes predictable, right . Theres real value in having a Commander In Chief at a dangerous time like this, having someone our adversaries see as unpredictable, he may be willing to use the appropriate measure of force. That has a great deterring effect, and thats what happened, okay. This is in theory, this is what Donald Trump achieved in his first term. That was House SpeakerMike Johnson touting former President Trumps unpredictability as he spoke during a virtual event yesterday. Joining us now democratic Congressman Jake Auchincloss of massachusetts. Congressman, good morning. You know, What Johnson Views as a virtue there, trumps unpredictability probably viewed differently by some of americas allies in europe and elsewhere as well as those, lets say, in ukraine depending on our aid. Lets get your reaction to what he said. Do you think unpredictability is a strength . Jonathan, first of all, good morning. I find it astounding how willing my republican colleagues are to just walk around next to Donald Trump and cleanup after his messes and try to explain to the american people why his idiocies are somehow brilliance in disguise. Youd think theyd be tired of it after almost a decade of doing it, but they continue to be his lapdog. No, hes not prepared to be Commander In Chief. And people who know a whole lot more than Mike Johnson on National Security Have said so including his defense secretary, former chief of staff, his national security advisor, his former chief of staff, who was a fourstar general, theyve all said this man should never be near nuclear codes. They said he had erratic and nonsensical ideas for north korea. And they had said his plans regarding Ukraine And Russia were functionally to hand ukraine over to russia and thereby embolden the worst autocrats the world over not just in beijing but the kremlin as well. Hes going to not only erode our institutions at home but empower the dictators abroad. It seemed like for a while there republicans were willing to break with trump on foreign policy, but even that never happened. The worlds eyes are still on the Middle East awaiting what Response Israel may deliver to iran after those Missiles Attack of a few days prior. President biden has weighed in here. He said he hopes israel does not target iranian nuclear facilities, suggested Energy Facilities should also be offlimits. What do you think an appropriate response would be . Do you agree with the president . I agree. I think shaping the time, place, and manner of this response is best done in private deliberations and not in open air conversations or in conjectures. Clearly, israel needs to respond to iran. Iran launched one of the biggest missile against Civilian Population centers in israel. Israel has to maintain deterrence. Ultimately, though, the critical unlock in this region for a more Peaceful Future is for hamas to be defeated, to have no role in postwar governance in gaza, and for the hostages to be released. To achieve that, itll require that netanyahu understand the thing that hamas fears most in the world is not israel. It is fatta. It is an alternative to governance in gaza that offers security, infrastructure, education, in a way that creates a positive future rather than a nihilistic one for the people. Itll be the critical Way Israel defeats hamas for the long term. Turning to matters at home, itll four weeks until election day. Give us a brief sense of the most important issues on your constituents minds. Cost of living, housing, and health care, in particular. I think generally a sense of going forward versus being pulled backwards. Trumps policies regarding tariffs, reproductive rights, regarding the rule of law. Pull this country backwards and downwards. Kamalas agenda is about expanding the envelope of freedom to ever more people in ever more ways. That thesis alongside Kitchen Table concerns around Cost Of Living are the animating features. Democratic Congressman Jake Auchincloss of massachusetts, Thank You. Good to be with with you. Up next here, more from Vice PresidentKamala Harris Interview on 60 minutes Last Night.
