Whats known as Hostage Square here in tel aviv, its an emotional ceremony. People are openly weeping as they remember the lives lost on October 7th. One of many emotional ceremonies to take place across the country, including early this morning at the site of the nova Music Festival. There was a Moment Of Silence marking the moment that hamas militants crossed from gaza, storming the Music Festival as well as the kibbutz, killing and kidnapping innocent israelis. And while israel takes this moment to remember, the war rages on, and at least two Fronts Today in lebanon, according to the Israeli Military, 100 israeli planes struck 120 hezbollah sites in a single hour. We have been seeing some of the most intense bombardment there of the war, as the civilian toll in lebanon continues to rise. Hezbollah, though, continuing to Fire Rockets into israel, and then in gaza, that offensive now underway. A Renewed Offensive announced by the Israeli Military in the northern part of the strip, ordering evacuations, some 300,000 palestinians evacuated from northern, ordered to evacuate from Northern Gaza over the weekend. As a new offensive was announced, targeting once again, the Refugee Camp there. The Civilian Casualty count, numbering in excess of 40,000. All of this as the region is bracing for Israels Response to Irans Missile Strike from last week. Chris. Erin mclaughlin, thank you. The anniversary of the attack is also being marked here in new york. Nbcs George Solis is at columbia university. What are you hearing from people there, george . Reporter on this grim day, October 7th. We have seen a number of demonstrations of protests, even leading up to to the day. At columbia, things have remained peaceful. A number of demonstrators oulds outside the hall. The hostages have yet to come home, but no closer to a cease fire deal. Talking to students on the ground, they say Theres Moment of escalation when pro palestinian protesters set up on the opposite side of the where the students are and theres a current Art Installation commemorating and remembering the lives lost. There were moments of tension. I cannot underscore the presentation of nypd officials around campus to make sure these situations dont escalate further than they need to. For a lot of jewish students and faculty, today was not a day for them to reminisce about the past protests and demonstrations and violence that they saw over the last year. It was really just a moment to reflect on the lives lost during the deadly attack, as well as praying for those hostages and the hope they will be reunited with their Loved Ones. As i mentioned, i spoke with students here about whats happening inside the halls of columbia. Access very restricted today. Heres what those students had to tell me. The Culture Hasnt changed. The university is attempting to put band aids on bullet holes. I appreciate theyre adding public Safety Security guards to ensure that students are safe but at the end of the day, theyre not doing anything to address the root of the problem which is that columbia has a systemic problem, rampant in the Rule Making Body for the university and frankly, rampant among the student body. Reporter as i have been talking to people here, of course some of the questions i have is concerns about safety given the escalation in the middle east, and a lot of them say, look, we are here. We know the risks of being in these large gatherings, but it is nothing compared to the atrocities that so many of these people encountered on October 7th. And so for them, they will continue to hold these rallies, hold these demonstrations and continue putting the pressure on anyone to hopefully reach those deals and bring those hostages home. Chris. George solis, thank you for that. Hurricane milton has explosively intensified, thats the update we just got from the national Hurricane Center, now warning of the Category 5 storm strength. Bill karins is joining me now. Some of the numbers im looking at in this warning. 175 miles per hour winds. And knowing yesterday we were talking about a 60 miles per hour Tropical Storm. This is the record breaker. We have never had a storm intensified this fast in 24 hours. This broke the record that was will ma. This is going up, it appears now, 115 miles per hour in 24 hours. You can thank very warm, extremely record breaking warm water in the Gulf Of Mexico and it was the perfect recipe for this storm to explode. A small storm, a pin needle eye. Were not sure how low its going to go. This is extremely rare to see a storm of this strength anywhere in the world, let alone this close to the united states and mexico. The Hurricane Center, were waiting to see when it will peak. Conditions will get a little more unfavorable in about 36 hours from now. Thats why we dont have this Making Landfall in florida as a Category 5 thankfully. Still, a major hurricane is a category 3. The cone of uncertainty, still kind of wide. Everyone wants to know, do i have to evacuate, listen to your emergency managers, know your zones. I think a lot of people learned that lesson with helene. They knew exactly how high the water got. This could be double that. A lot of people arent going to say, im going to ride it out. Helene got Everyones Attention on the West Coast of florida. Our Computer Models will study these, as we get the landfall. The black line is the Hurricane Center path. As of now, straight through Tampa Bay. Right down through sarasota. If that black line holds as the forecast. The air at this point, typically about 40 miles. That could bring as far north as cape key. We have a wide zone. Thats why the evacuations are just beginning for the Barrier Islands. It takes those people longer to get out, the businesses to close doubt. We will move the evacuations closer to the bays and outside of the Barrier Islands on the beaches. The storm surge, somewhere were thinking, 8 to 12 feet. Were not having a Category 5 landfall. Its likely going to be category 3. Its growing in size, not strength. We zoomed in on Tampa Bay itself, with helene, the water made it to 6 or 7 1 2 feet. That was record breaking. Never been that high before. All of these areas that had flooding on the sides and curbs and pictures we have been showing you of people who lost stuff and property, sitting out there on the road. This up to 8 to 12 feet would be 5 feet higher than the Water Level you just experienced. Now all the were getting not just on the bottom level of some homes but toward the top level. If we get Wave Action on top of that, thats more damage. One of the keys im watching, when do we get the landfall. High tide is thursday morning. Low tide is going to be around early afternoon on wednesday. The tide is going to be coming which will add momentum to the water. A little additional damage. Thats not great. We would like to get the storm to move in earlier. We can add 2 to 3 feet, to Add Numbers on the storm surge. Thats not great. A lot of people saying, the storm is going to get weaker. Its a Category 5, one of the strongest we have seen. Its not going to maintain that intensity. Right now its 160 miles wide, predicted to be 360 miles wide at landfall. Anywhere in yellow means you have a chance of losing power in the storm. The storm is growing in size even though the catastrophic eye is getting a little bit weaker. Weaker quote unquote, still a category 3. Chris, thats all the stuff were watching. I just want to make sure im understanding you correctly here. The entire width of florida. Yes. Is at risk of losing power. At least getting Tropical Storm gusts, over 39 miles per hour in the 40 to 50 range. This is helene at its max, up to the Georgia Border down to miami. This is almost as wide and big as helene. So this storm, you know, a lot of people youre going to hear, you know, its slowing down to a category 4 or 3. Its getting weaker. Thats really for the people that are going to go through the eye. For everyone else in the whole state of florida, if it was a smaller storm, you wouldnt have this Wind Field thats this huge. Dont listen to the weaker comments in the next couple of days, and listen to your emergency managers. Could save your life. No kidding, bill, thank you for that. Basically that means that across florida, millions are preparing for their second major hurricane in just two weeks. Nbcs Marissa Para is on the ground in tampa, florida, what are you hearing from people there ahead of this storm . Reporter you can see those preparations happening behind me, chris, and what we are looking at is this really important work of Debris Removal happening as we speak. This is happening all across florida, but right now, we are reporting to you from the very hard Hit Barrier Island of treasure island, and so we are seeing crews working around the clock, 24 7. Its something we have been hearing governor ron desantis, local agencies, local officials talking about making a priority. I want to point out, you know, this woman across the street. It looks like theyre shoveling trash, which it now is. But this was once their belongings, prized possessions. I see Christmas Ornaments in there, all kinds of things that were part of her home two weeks ago. Now posing a major risk. Hurricane helene only hit one week ago. These are the remnants of her possessions inside her home. They are shoveling it into a City Truck to bring to a landfill so it doesnt become projectiles. If the Christmas Ornaments float during a storm surge, thats a projectile. These are the things were seeing around here in addition to the mass evacuations. I want to walk down the street in a safe way to show you just how much work they have left to do. This is around the clock its happening, chris, to remove all of this debris. In addition to the evacuations, i want to take you from what we heard from one woman at a sandbagging site. Helene opened so many eyes. We saw people at the Sandbagging Location here in pinellas county. They have never taken precautions before. Heres what we heard. Im out here to fill up my sandbags. I didnt do it last time, and this time i want to feel better inside my home, and hopefully protect some of my stuff. Reporter we are now seeing evacuations happening up and down the Gulf Coast in places that i have not seen evacuations before, chris. The hotel we were staying at, which was zone b, we were told would be safe to stay in during the hurricane. They called us to inform us we need to evacuate by tomorrow. They are not staying open. Clearly a lot of precautions taken we havent seen in this area in a long time, chris. We know under 50 counties under a state of emergency, and governor ron desantis, on the Roads Today and tomorrow while you can, he said he might open those Highway Shoulders to accommodate for all the masses that are making their way out to higher ground, chris. I can tell you i was in Wisconsin Yesterday covering former President Trumps rally there. He talked about the biden Administrations Response to hurricane helene, particularly in places like north carolina. We know that is a key Battleground State in this election cycle, and some of what we heard the former president say were things like she, referring to Vice President harris, but really the Biden Harris Administration, sending Aid Money to other countries instead of to these areas that need that money, and of course the biden Administration And Fema are swatting that down, saying disaster dollars are for disaster situations, disaster areas. Relief flights being blocked and aid being held from republicanleaning communities in the disaster zone, and fema seizing supplies and property, things like that. All of those are things that the Administration And Fema in particular have been trying to fact check, saying those things are not true. Theres a concern that people will believe those things and that could keep them from getting the help that they need. I want you to hear a little bit about what the Fema Administrator had to say about this problem when she was on msnbc earlier today. All i hear on the ground is gratefulness and compassion, and a level of unity. Its frankly disappointing that were having to deal with this narrative. And the fact that theres a few leaders that are having a hard time telling the difference between Fact And Fiction is creating an impede to getting people the help they need. The White House putting out a memo over the weekend, talking about the fact that its concerned that the disinformation is going to keep people from seeking the help that they need right now, and so the response to that has been that folks should go to trusted voices, political voices or otherwise. Well, chris, i think with respect to the war in gaza, certainly the families are right in calling for the return of their Loved Ones. Just take a step back here. On October 7th of last year, israel wasnt the only victim of this attack. There were people from 30 nations who are killed or taken hostages, including 46 americans who were murdered that day, 12 who were taken hostage. Four were, of course, released. Four were murdered in captivity. That was hersh, and there are four americans still alive in captivity in gaza, keith, sagi, edan and omer, whose parents you spoke to earlier. This is why the united states has been backing israel over the last year. As i said, with respect to the war in gaza, theres a view that the idf has achieved a lot of objectives and it may be time to get those it is time, i should say, to get those hostages home and conclude a deal. Israel is actually under fire from four different directions, not just from gaza, but also from hezbollah and lebanon, from the west bank, and from iran as we saw last tuesday, and so the united states has been standing with, despite its differences with the bibi government, it has been standing with the government of israel. Of course, this isnt Israels War of choice. The war could end tomorrow if iran, if hamas, hezbollah decided they did not want to attack israel or the united states. Yeah, you know, talking to omers parents, understandable level of frustration, they want leadership. And a year of war has strained the u. S. Israel Relationship, and i want to play some of what Vice President harris said about this very important alliance. Do we have a real close ally . Prime Minister Netanyahu . I think with all due respect, the better question is do we have an important alliance between the american people and the israeli people, and the answer to that question is yes. But of course the israeli people are not making decisions about how to prosecute this war, and her comments or some might say, lack of direct answer came after president biden said on friday, he doesnt know if Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to influence the u. S. Election in november. And that he should remember how much biden has helped him. I wonder what you think the impact of our election is on whats happening, if anything, and where does that relationship really stands . Look, chris, i think actually Vice President harriss answer was spot on. Across every administration, democratic, republican, labor governments, theres been a strong alliance between the israeli government and the u. S. Government. This goes back to 1948 to harry Truman And David ben carin. I quibble a little bit with the premise of your question which is that the u. S. Israel Relationship has been strained over the past year. I would argue the opposite, its grown much closer. You have weekly calls between yoav gallant, and our secretary of defense, lloyd austin, regular interactions between the national Security Council and israeli Government Decision making bodies. Regular engagement between our State Department and israel. More congressional delegations and visitor going back and forth between jerusalem, tel aviv, washington, and so forth than you have had in any previous year. If i can, though, jeremy, nobody is questioning the outreach, the efforts for diplomacy. That is clear. Theres strategic alignment. When we put Carrier Strikers In The Red Sea tell me what you see as the result of that. I will tell you the results. The u. S. Has engaged in Military Activity to back up our diplomacy, when iranian surrogates and proxies attacked our troops and our bases killed three u. S. Service members, we used precise Military Force against iranian surrogates and proxies. When israel needed weaponry to go after hezbollah, we provided that weaponry. When israel needed Iron Dome to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles, thats the united states congress, the american Taxpayer And Government that provided that. Theres incredible alignment. Youre going to find areas of disagreement between allies on this tactic or that matter, but there is broad strategic alignment between the united states and israel, and i think this narrative, somehow the relationship is frayed or strained, i think its fundamentally, factually inaccurate, and i think it undermines a key u. S. Objective in the middle east, which is were trying to promote a durable peace and secure dynamic between israel and all of its neighbors, including saudi arabia, including the Gulf Arab countries to build on the Peace Treaties with jordan and egypt. Thats the u. S. s goal, the people who have undermined that are iran, hezbollah and hamas. Lets talk about the internal politics if we can for just a second. Last hour, we heard j. D. Vance attacking the Biden Harris Administration for not doing enough to bring the hostages home. Let me play that. It is disgraceful that we have an american president and Vice President who havent done a thing. Vice president harris, our message is bring them home. Use your authority to help bring them home. I think for some people, that was striking, given the location that it was at on a day that is meant to commemorate. I want your reaction to what you heard the Vice President ial candidate say. I fundamentally disagree that the president and Vice President havent done a Darn Thing to bring the hostages home. They have worked around the clock, met with hostage families, theyre engaged on a regular basis with the qataris, the egyptians, the emirates, saudis, turkish mediators to put pressure on sinwar, and of course theyre talking to israel every single day. Now, of course no ones going to rest until all of the hostages are home, and reunited with their Loved Ones. I think thats just a partisan political attack, and i also think, you know, as long as were talking about records here, Donald Trump was president for four years. And look at what he did in the face of iranian aggression. When iran shot down an american aircraft, in international airspace in june 2019. Donald trump sent a Tweet And Iran was emboldened, and then when iran actually fired rockets and missiles at our troops, Donald Trump said that traumatic Brain Injury you suffered, injuries of more than A Hundred service members, those are headaches. They doubled down in the last week. His foolishness, weakness on iran is well understood by people in the region, and you know what, they dont fundamentally respect that weakness and foolishness. The united states under president bidens leadership, Vice President harriss leadership has been incredibly strong standing with allies, against terrorism, defending israel in a coalition in april, and again, last tuesday, i think this is a very strong record. What do we know about what trump would actually do on abortion if elected . Reporter chris, not a whole lot in large part because he has been kind of all over the place on this issue. He continues to tout that he helped overturn roe v. Wade, hes proud of that. At the same time, he has been posting things on Social Media that hes going to be great for women and their reproductive rights. He claims he wants to make ivf free for all americans. But has provided very few details since he made that announcement on how he would actually do that. He eventually recently said that he would not sign an Abortion Ban into law at the federal level after waffling on the issue for many many months, and then you had his wife, melania trump, come out with that Black And White video saying shes in support of reproductive rights, and heres what she said in a recent interview about that. Yes, he knew my position and my believes since the day we met. And i believe in individual freedom. He let me be my own person, and he respects that, and i respect that. As i let him be his own person. He has different beliefs, and he will do what he believes. Reporter chris, he keeps trying to moderate but then you have things like what you just played from his running mate, j. D. Vance. The republican party is not necessarily singing from the same Song Book on this issue, and the Harris Campaign is having a Field Day with this issue, and some of the past things that both former President Trump have said and other republicans and things like project 2025, whether it be in ads or in recent interviews like harris hammering him on that on a podcast called her daddy this week. How should the Harris Campaign take advantage of what seems to be conflicting views by the Trump Campaign over abortion . I think they should keep doing exactly what theyre doing, which is to point out these are more than just conflicting views. He is lying. What is happening right now is that Donald Trump is trying to sanitize his actual position on abortion access. He has been bragging about overturning roe v. Wade. The reason that we are in the position that we are in around ivf, around Peoples Access to the Health Care that they need because it is Health Care is because of him. It is his direct actions. And in calling it, you know, letting him sort of get away with this, its conflicting or mixed messaging, i think we are trading away what is maybe the most important point here, which is that he is making it actually very clear where he stands on these things, and i think he has got to be held to account. When he says i wont sign a national Abortion Ban into law, that is actually missing the point. The next president Ial Administration is going to deal, again, with the issue of medication abortion. It went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court didnt reach the merits and they essentially said come back when you have somebody withstanding. Were going to see another one of those cases. Unless Donald Trump says i will direct my Department Of Justice to defend the fda and defend access to medication abortion, which is the number one way people actually access abortion, he is saying that he will support a nationwide ban, and he needs to be held accountable for that. So until he can say that, unequivocally, without waffling, he is actually giving the clearest indication possible of exactly what hes planning on doing around access to abortion care. We keep talking, maya, about the election being, you know, decided on the margins. Georgia is one of those place, and we just learned what happened there. That the abortion, sixweek Abortion Ban, essentially, is back in place. Anybody who has an appointment after 5 00 today, this afternoon, it no longer is operational, and it has to go through, according to our legal correspondent, lisa says that you have to wait until all of those appeals have gone through. Right. Is that the kind of thing, bringing that back in a very real way, on to the laps of voters essentially you think could have an impact . Absolutely. I think that whats going on in georgia, whats going on across the country, but i think theres a really clear and devastating illustration thats happening in georgia right now, theres a Sixweek Ban in place that effectively, for a lot of people. Six weeks is not there are people who do not know they are pregnant within six weeks. This is essentially a complete ban on abortion in georgia, and it will be in place until theres appeals go through. Those are real women, real health issues. We have seen already out of georgia, just devastating news of people, you know, were losing people because of this ban, and that is directly because of Donald Trump. And if he is bragging about getting rid of roe v. Wade, he is bragging about the conditions that women in georgia are going to be met with when they are trying to access the Health Care that they need. One year later, there is still so much Pain And Anguish for the estimated 101 hostages held in gaza. And for the hostages who have been released, the trauma of what happened to them remains. Some recently spoke to Nbc News about their time in captivity, what its like to be free now, the guilt they say they feel for being released while so many others are still there. I still have triggers to deal with every single day. Im scared of being by myself. I was really independent. And im trying to regain it. Since the 7th, its like ive been taken away. I dont even look at myself in the mirror because im not here. I havent come back. Im still in gaza. I saw my face maybe twice during the entire captivity. And i didnt recognize myself for a second. I had a different look in my eyes. In the evenings, those are the times i allow myself to cry. Nobodys going to look at me and say poor thing shes sad again. I dont want anybody to bring me a tissue. I just want to feel. Wow. Joining me now is guy levine, head of the hostages and missing Families Forum medical and resilience team. That is probably not anything shocking to you but to those of us hearing that kind of response for the first time about how theyve lost themselves, not even thinking about something as simple as not seeing yourself in the mirror, and then seeing a different person. I just want to get your reaction and help us to understand the price that has been paid even though we all rejoiced when they came home. You know, you see now, and we just remember the ceremony of the people, by the people of israel, and it ended with kidnapped with his brother, and his father was kidnapped and murdered in captivity, and song about the secrets in the field, and they can tell you that the returning hostages still hide many secrets in their body and soul, and they cannot really recover. The families could not really recover, and the israeli people will not really recover until all the hostages return home and of course now there are still 101 hostages. They are still kidnapped in gaza. They dont have time. They are in hell. The words need to do something about it. I must tell you, in the first months in october, i focused that if we will not bring the hostages back home, we are risking third world war, and unfortunately what we see now with the threat of a regional war reflect the concerns that we should all have. So the Bell Ring not only for the israeli people all people in the u. S. And other countries, we have to bring back the hostages and they will enable stopping the war. In our last hour, i spoke with ronan and orna, the parents of omer neutra, and they said they get out of bed every day and they fight and they have hope because there is no alternative. Its what they have to do. And the best Case Scenario is that omer and the other hostages are still alive, that they come home, what is your hope, and if they come home and we hope they do, what have you learned in the last year that could be helpful to them . And, yes, as a physician, as someone we have seen in life and you know just now we had the new year, and i witness elma, 85 years old, with a Valve Replacement several years ago, and was kidnapped to gaza and did not get food or medical attention, and she came here after 51 days, very close to death, and she survived, and shes recovering, and we say, as one of the killed persons on October 7th said, the hope dies last, and our national anthem that we never lose hope, so, yes, even after a year, we have hope. The families have hope. I know that the resilience of the hostages is remarkable, but we have to give them a chance. If we dont find a way by some kind of a deal to release them now, every day could be their last day, and they are facing possibility of murder, as happened to the recent six hostages that were murdered. They could face starvation, mutilation, dying from diseases, from injuries, their lives are at risk at any moment. And i must say that i see, and im trying to look at the positive, i see how the families support each other at good times and bad times, and then asking our viewers, close your eyes, and imagine the joy that we will all have when the hostages return to their homes and families. And you know that israel just now rescued a woman who was for ten years kidnapped in gaza after she was soldier, and she now returned to her family. So we dont lose hope. Never.
