Ago back in 1853. And that unassuming gable Roof Building that you see still standing there today. Because in 1854, just one year after the little white high School House was built, a group of people got together in that Little White Schoolhouse came up with an idea that would change everything. The people who met in that building in that Little White Schoolhouse decided they should actually start a new Political Party. A Coalition Party that brought together free Soil Movement and disinfected democrats who all had different political visions for the country. But who were all united around their opposition to the moral crisis of the time of slavery. Now, they decided to call their new Political Party the Republican Party. The rest as they say is kind of history. The Republican Party would, of course, be the party of lincoln, the party that ends slavery and establish itself as one of americas two major political organizations for the next century and a half and still today. It is one of a historys greater tragedies that the Republican Party of today is no longer that collision of people committed to the idea of fighting back against americas worst impulses. Because todays Republican Party is, instead, a cult of personality. That basically revolves around one guy, Donald Trump. There is still moments of rightness. Today in wisconsin the birthplace as i just walked you through of americas grand old party, a new kind of coalition came together. To put its own stamp on american history, earlier this evening, a republican chair from iowa, you see him right there. Took the stage to introduce another republican. The daughter, of course, of a republican Vice President who has long been despised in many democratic circles in pushing americans to the war in iraq. A woman who was once member of republican Leadership Serving as chair just three years ago. Yep. She was there, right there. Basically stood on the stage with the democratic nominee for president , Kamala Harris, and said this. I tell you i have never voted for a democrat. But this year i am proudly casting my vote for Vice PresidentKamala Harris. [ cheers and applause ] [ Crowd Chanting ] thank you, liz. Thank you, liz thank you, but mostly we are not going back. [ cheers and applause ] i ask you to meet this moment. I ask you to stand in truth. To reject the depraved cruelty of Donald Trump. And i ask you instead to help us elect Kamala Harris. There are so many powerful forces that have been intent on trying to demean and belittle and make people afraid. And there are many who know it is wrong and then there are those who have the courage to speak out loudly about it. And the conviction to speak truth and, you know, it is so admirable when anyone does it and especially when it is difficult to do in an environment such as this. But Liz Cheney really is a leader who puts country above party and above self. You may be sitting at home saying this does not matter. Nothing matters, Liz Cheney is not going to move the election. I happen to think It Matters but listen, maybe you are right. Wisconsin has been a State Won or loss by less than 1 . It is always close and it is going to be close. In that context, pretty much every vote, every new coalition member, everything may matter. This endorsement and her decision to campaign for harris not happening in a vacuum alone. In the last few weeks over 100 former republican officials endorsed Kamala Harris. Believe me, and they said It T is not because they agree with everything the Harriswalz Ticket believes. It is because they feel as Liz Cheney feels that putting patriotism ahead of partisanship is not an aspirations it is a duty. Lifelong republican, former Trump Aide put It This way last night. I am really, really proud as a conservative to have the opportunity to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in this election. For republicans who may be on the fence. I understand how frightening it can be to potentially separate with your party. But Donald Trump and j. D. Vance can not be trusted with the constitution, they can not be trusted to uphold our Rule Of Law and can not be trusted to enact responsible policy. So, of course, it is great. Good to have republicans like Liz Cheney and Hutch Inson and the 100 republican officials who endorsed harris speaking out about the fact that one candidate will defend the constitution and one wont. But here is the thing. There are a whole lot of republicans, prominent ones, voiced their opposition to trump, who expressed concern about specific things like his ability to be commander in chief. His temperment, his morality who still stopped short of endorsing his opponent, Kamala Harris. Look, i will call them out. We need to. Mitt romney who fears trump will target him and his family if reelected. People like former president george w. Bush Who Trust attacked at every turn. People like John Kelly who said that Trump Quote has Nothing But Contempt for our democratic constitutions and the constitutions and the rule, he would know he worked for him and Mike Pence who would definitely knows who life was literally threatened by trump and his Mob And Safety was a matter of such utter indifference to trump, warranting only a so what. I am not saying it is easy. It is not easy. It is never easy to go against your own Political Party. Liz cheney felt the consequences. She was excommunicated from the party she spent her life, that her father spent his Life Serving in. But as Kamala Harris said tonight about the Threat Trump poses, there are many who know it is wrong and then there are those that have the courage to speak out loudly about it and the conviction to speak truth. Mitt romney, george bush, george kelly, Mike Pence. We are 30 days from an election, if you are not going to speak up loudly now, your moment to play a role in the History Books may be passing you by. Join ming me now, chair of the democratic party of wisconsin, mark, i will start with you because you are sitting here with me. You were with Liz Cheney when she came out and endorsed Kamala Harris. That was a significant piece of news. I want to start by asking you this, does it matter question. You hear that a lot. Do you think It Matters . 100 It Matters. This cavalier brush, she was wrongly booted out of her party, she lost reelection, you know, no constituency for Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney. Tens of millions of americans voted for Dick Cheney for president and Mitt Romney for president , a different category the Mike Pence, Paul Ryans all on republican tickets who said they are not voting for Donald Trump. They have not gone the full 9 yards, none of them, but for liz who said that they are going to vote for Kamala Harris. But, listen, the keywords here are Permission Structure. There are tons of republicans out there. Former republicans out there. Independents out there, voted for Donald Trump in the past. Voted for many republicans on president ial ballots and down ballots over the years that need that extra push. It is, you get some credit, i guess, if you are going to say no, i am not voting for trump. Full credit if you are going to vote for the person. The one person who can beat him. It can hurt all of them as well. All of these people. They dont have, they have something to lose, certainly, as Liz Cheney did. What is holding them back . That . Something elses . That is a mystery. Pence and romney both said they are not voting for trump. Both for personal and i think unsurprising reasons. Why they are not going, you know, often you hear things like i will write in ronald reagan. I dont know why they think they are protecting themselves or what is stopping them there. Then a different category you dont know what Paul Ryan is thinking, george w. Bush, now, in texas a couple weeks ago when i was with, when i was interviewing liz and a couple days earlier she had endorsed Kamala Harris and i asked her if her dad was voting, she said her dad was voting for Kamala Harris it made a little news. The follow up i heard from a lot of people that day, where is w . When are we going to hear from him . I dont think it is that big of a deal. There is a solid, public core of republicans but big names are out there that have not spoken out. I think this is, this is an important election. I hate to be overstating this. I think it is that big and the Dick Cheney news. Now, let me go to you. I will ask you, kind of a similar question. No pressure, wisconsin is kind of a key decider here in the outcome of this election as you know well. The birthplace of the Republican Party as we all have been learning in the past 24 hours, as you talked to people after the rally and in advance of it, how much of it . Do the endorsements of the Security Officials and republican officials matter to the voters you are talking to in the state that may be on the fence or waiting as mark just said for a Permission Structure . These things do matter. They matter to two different groups of voters. One group of voters that are the typical Swing Voters that people talk about. These are people who do not pay attention to politics. Think about politics the way you and i think about the javelin at the olympics, we are vaguely aware it happens every four years but not seeking out. Just hearing democrats and republicans are all agree that Kamala Harris is the person it might filter through, it might matter for some of them. A different group who are the high information highly engaged, highly principalled conservative republicans who is first and core is to the flag and the constitution and the united states of america. And for them Liz Cheney shows that you can be yourself with your conservative commitments. But put country over Party And Everything else and cast a ballot and remain with integrity and open the door for those voters that would not be Spring Voters in any stretch. It can matter in the state that can come down to less than 1 . That is why it was such a game changer. It was, i was not obviously there. A really compelling event to watch on television. The other question that i have been wanting to ask you, who are the undecided people . What are they waiting to hear at this point in time . I mean, how do you assess the Percentage Or Number of undecided voters in wisconsin and kind of, what are they on the edge over . So, it is less than 5 at this point. We are doing everything we can to reach them and all of the folks that will vote for harris. There are people with Absentee Ballots in their house right now who has not voted. But these voters, they are mixed. Some of them are people who are very conservative, generally vote republican, but think that the Abortion Ban is uncrossable line. They are trying to decide, you know, can i really vote for someone who supports an Abortion Ban given they agree with me on other things. For some people, the opposite. Faith tells them they can never vote for someone on the other side. That group is smaller, i will tell you, but agree with harris on taking on the Price Gouging big companies. You know, think they will be better in the come if they vote for harris. Some of them think all politicians are crooks for those voters, talking to them about how life will effect them directly. That, and the Abortion Ban. Those things can make a difference. And i talk to the people at the door. They have a Grab Bag of views, it is about showing up, listening to them and engaging at a level of shared values that makes the difference another group. The veterans. And the principals of this country. Andtodays event helps us reach them. To the point of those veterans and the people, it is a comprehensive break down. That is why it is a good state party. One thing that struck me watching It Today. Now, the those are messages that work well for Liz Cheney, right . That is a speech, could be delivered by a pretrump republican 33 days out in many ways. What do you make of that messaging . You are trying to come together. Mainstream republicans. Liz cheney does specifically narrow her focus to the constitution, to the Rule Of Law and also Foreign Policy a little bit. These are three core constituencies. Liz did not get into this but this is part of it. Just trumps conduct. Decency. Liberal or conservative. It is a basic american that you sort of heard it. Reportedly, that is a big part of the harriswalz message. Basic decency. I was out with walz and you hear neighbor, neighbor, neighbor, that is a word you hear with both of them. A unity behind them. Basic core principals, i think it hits that. I mean it seems consistent. It was a smart message for today. If is so interesting. Thank you very much. I love talking to you. Ben, you got 5 undecided voters to go and reach. You are very busy, thank you very much, and javelin is a big thing and i think about it a lot. [ laughter ] so i will give it, you know. He is should be impeached and prosecuted for her actions. [ cheers and applause ] Vice President harris is just one of many people that Donald Trump believes ought to be prosecuted. On multiple occasions we showed you one of them. Multiple during the campaign he has fantasizing about having legal revenge against nancy pelosi, Liz Cheney and fellow members of the january 6th. Others say trump must be taken at his word. 50 legal experts, 39 said it was likely or very likely to order the Justice Department to investigate a political adversary if he was elected to a second term. Joining me now, author of New York Times people, a former federal prosecutor and senior writer at politico. His latest piece the comes Trump Revenge Tour both excellent pieces, may scare you but have a lot of information. So, i let me start with you, there are a number of stark and alarming quotes in your piece. This one stuck out to me that kind of summed it up by the founder of the conservative federal Society And AssistantAttorney General and acting Attorney General for president george w. Bush there is every reason to believe that Donald Trump would seek to use criminal enforcement and the fbi as leverage for his personal and political ends in a second term. We dont know what will happen but the risk is more concrete with a higher probability that any in my lifetime. 42 said it was likely that the Trump Term would have the norm of Keeping Criminal Enforcement free of White House influence. You also talk about the norms, norms have been abided by for a number of President S. I wanted to ask you, you know, as people are trying to understand the specifics, like, what do these experts fear could happen . When the norms are not abided by, that the system may not be prepared for . Reporter that is a great question. Nixon was pushed to resign after he mettled in an fbi investigation, right . We have a burglary of the democratic national headquarters at watergate, nixons people are interfering in the investigation and that is why he lost his precedency. Since then it has been a bedrock that President S do not try to use the Justice Department for their own political ends. Especially they dont try to prosecute their adversaries for politically motivated reasons, abuse of power. It hinges on norms because they work for the president they are part of the executive branch. The person who restrains the president is the president. It is not an outside check. And that is why this is such a delicate situation. Then when you have a candidate like former President Trump who is being so loud and clear about his plans to prosecute his enemies, the people we surveyed who work for the Justice Department formally, who were at the White House counsels office, they were the Government Official whos cared about upholding these norms, what they are saying, they are alarmed, freaked out by the things they are saying because they understand how much the system depends on the Self Restraint of the person in the White House. Yeah, such an interesting the consistency over precedencies. I worked for two President S. There was this unspoken respect for the independence of the department. And it was the case for many precedencies as well. One of the point that is interesting that you make in your piece is that it, a second Trump Term would not be full of not full of Don Mcgans it would be full of Jeffrey Clark types potentially. In terms of the role that different people could play because you break it down in a frightening way, the Attorney General that people think of that he is responsible for just kind of announcing prosecutions or announcing investigations. What are the things all of the things, an acting Attorney General even could have the power to do that people should be aware of. The Attorney General runs the department, right . They can direct subordinants to open certain investigations and pursue certain Charging Theories and file certain types of cases. There are sort of internal guard reallies, that they do not go along. The Attorney General by design executes power within the Justice Department. He is not the only Figure Sort of in this sort of universe that we need to be concerned about. There are other people be sides the Attorney General who exercise power in this area, too. We spent 10 years. Some of the jobs i could not tell you what they do. You mentioned a couple of roles that people may never of heard of. Having an outside role given the understanding of the job. It can be anyone that trump wants right that would be the person that would be his liaison. Simply because the president has other things to do including watching television if we are talking about another Trump Term. The white House Council would have an important role in that process. There are i knew about that one. Give us another one. At the Justice Department, the head of the criminal division, over sees prosecutors in washington, the head of the fraud section, oversees prosecutions concerning white collar crime. I used to work there. It is a very, very powerful office. The u. S. Attorneys obviously throughout the country, particularly the ones in manhattan, northern virginia, dc, delaware, if trump wants to pursue the bidens, those are going to be particularly important as well so interesting. You dont know about all of these roles. Emily, you also in your piece you talk about what, the phrase you use is tension in the system. Which i thought was an interesting phrasing in terms of how you describe [dropped audio ]. What happens, what, what as you talk to these experts about their worst fear, no voluntary compliance with that. What is the thing they fear the most . I think they are concerned about losing this norm of independence for the Justice Department. The idea that, you know, Rule Of Law depends on the faith of the public that the decisions being made about who to prosecute, who to investigate are based on if there is evidence of a crime. And the priorities of Law Enforcement officials are about keeping the country safe and making sure that our laws are fairly and evenhandedly enforced. If you have the president who is using prosecution as a tool of his own power, things are arbitrary and unstable. People lose faith in the Rule Of Law. That is a real question. So, i think, the people who we are talking to, the people that work for the Justice Department or for former President S they care about the stability of the Rule Of Law and preserving the country and the democracy as we know it. It is, it is, it depends if the Justice Department is an important tradition to state the obvious. You did have, before i let you go back to your lives. You did have kind of a more positive note in your Piece Or Kind of a note to bring people back from this fear a little bit. You talked about the headwinds for trump. Including this. Then, a challenge of getting Line Prosecutors the people who would litigate and try it in court at stake to go along with legally thin or baseless cases. The argument is they may want him to do that. Doable to be sure but not necessarily a simple matter. All of these people are out there not just going to abide by what trump would want them to do. I would hope not. One of the reasons that this would not really go in the worst possible direction. Having Career Prosecutors potentially saying no, i will not sign on to this. You can shop around for them. Right . The way that i thought about this is, you know, the guardrails around this in this area a lot of them were internal or within the Justice Department and the government, right . And concerned like when an investigation begins and the process of running the investigation and things like that. That is much riskier now as a result of the supreme Courts Decision in the trump case. Essentially giving trump much more discretion with the Attorney General. But the other guardrails that exist outside of the government, outside of the executive branch, grand jurors, trial judges, appellate judges, those things may sort of operate in the way that we expect them and hope them to operate. It is important for people to understand. Thank you very much and emily, thank you very much. These pieces are so informative, so smart. You will feel almost like a lawyer, i did. I appreciate both of you joining me and really explaining it. Still to come tonight, coach Tim Walz is about to get off of the sidelines, thank god, and back in the game. I worked for a lot of politicians, people running for congress, for governor, yes, for president for many years. The best ones are not perfect. They are a little rough around the edges at times. That authenticity is part of what people like about them. Because people, voters out there are not perfect either. The good news is, now that the debate is over, the campaign is putting Tim Walz back on the trail where he belongs. He has been out on the trail a little bit. I mean out on the trail doing lots of stuff. Yesterday, embarked on a Bus Tour through pennsylvania including a rally in york with Senator Fetterman and latino leaders in redding. Went of the states democratic voters live. But the Philadelphia Inquirer has an interesting report out about Working Class Voters in philly. Once a key democratic base are now leaning republican. Large here according to this reporting because of the impact people are feeling thereof rising prices and from the Trump Era a Messaging Push straight from trump himself for the precovid era when he was president. Not on the level but people are buying it. I mean, this piece notes the shift began back in 2020 when democrats lost ground in neighborhoods where Education Levels were lowest and poverty was the highest. The Trend Cuts along racial lines but in areas home to latino voters the fastest demographic group in we heard things about the economy that matches what we heard from other workingclass neighborhoods. We also saw some depressed Voter Turnout and there were some individuals who talked about immigration and actually how they were not confident in Vice President , harris Immigration Plan based on what they thought they knew about former President Trumps plan Vice President , Harriss Plan so those were kind of the three big things. The economy, overall Disengagement And Emigration that we heard from some latino voters. Such interesting reporting. Thank you so much for what you do and for being on to explain It To us. Tonight, please 250 americans of been evacuated from Lebanons Balance between Israel And Hezbollah mounts. Workers in Southern Lebanon are struggling to save people following israeli airstrikes. Quote, Body Parts are everywhere, children, civilian and bodies under rubble. These airstrikes happen just days after tehran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at israel earlier this week. The Nature And Degree of that israeli response, there is more sense of that as well as what iran may do in response to that Couldve Course have huge implications on the region of the world. Joining me now is the former deputy national Security Adviser under president obama. Ben, thank you for being here. Weve had so many of these conversations over the years in a variety of times including when i was at the State Department and you were in the White House. This is different, i think its important for people to understand and we are all in this Waiting Game of what is next. How will israel respond, what will iran do. You have been in a lot of these meetings in the Situation Room over the years. Anticipating similar type questions. What are some of those scenarios for people sitting in the Situation Room that theyre looking right now in the u. S. Government . First of all, [ inaudible ] to avoid a direct Military Conflict between Israel And Iran that can engulf the entire region beyond what we seen since October 7th. In terms of understanding the israeli response, there is something that they could do that is proportional, that is a response to the Missile Attacks but does not aim to ignite a larger wall war, that could hit some targets of the iranian revolutionary guard, some Military Installations or military targets inside iran to send a message to respond or they could launch a response that hints at the core of the reggie much harder. They could bomb Oil Facilities in iran, the revenue 13 depends on. They could bomb nuclear facilities in iran, obviously an incredibly sensitive area and that is much more likely to ignite a conflagration across the area. Iranian proxies in places like iraq could be mobilized. Iran could choose to retaliate against oilfields of u. S. Partners in the gulf and we could really be looking at massive Energy Disruptions and obviously potential loss of life across the region so including attacks on u. S. Forces, so that is what the administration would like to avoid but now the Decision Maker is really not in washington. It is in israel. No question. I think we know this, but what has been clear over the last year or so is that the u. S. Does not tell netanyahu what to do in the sense that he listens to it. Hes not waiting for the u. S. To tell him what to do. His distance advised really for them not to be on War Footing because it is keeping him, in many ways, and power. With all that being said, what should the u. S. Be doing . What can they even do in this moment . Honestly, not all that much. There were times earlier in the conflict since October 7th when if the u. S. Had tried to use leverage on netanyahu and potentially withhold certain weapons shipments, put more diplomatic pressure publicly on that now yahoo netanyahu with other countries that might get this back into a Ceasefire Deal but israel has been on the path to escalation for several weeks starting with pager tax, growing into strikes in beirut, killing the leader of hezbollah. Israel has fired back at the Houthi Group In Yemen and you know, they have committed to taking a retaliatory strike against iran and now iran has participated through that Missile Attacks are right now there is a kind of logic of escalation that has taken hold and that is a worrying sign here. What is the offramp to this becoming a bigger and wider conflict. That is what the administration is trying to do and im sure what theyre doing diplomatically is not just talking to the israelis. They are sending messages through channels to the iranians to not escalate further in working with other countries in the region to keep things as calm as possible but they are in a bit of a wait and see mode here and that is a tenuous place to be when youre watching events is much as you are trying to shape them. We only have 30 seconds left but aside from an impact on global Oil Markets which you mentioned, aside from obviously a horrific event like the death of u. S. Citizens in terms of the political impact, what are you watching . Im watching just generally scenes of chaos which trump will try to make use of. Watching in lebanon, lebanon has a very large population of american citizens and many of those people have family back in places like michigan that are important to the Election And Rice disruptions could really disrupt the global economy because youre talking about potential increases in Gas Prices and talking about disruptions in the functioning for global economies of these things are all challenges. Ben rhodes, i could talk to you forever. Thank you, as always, for joining me tonight. You can catch a back your sundays at 12 00 p. M. , now it is time for the last word with lawrence odonnell. Hey, jen. We have breaking news on the october surprise. The first October Surprises now over. Port
