Good evening, im alicia menendez. We are just 34 days from Election Day 2024. And a short time ago, democratic governor Tim Walz of minnesota and republican senator Jj Vance faced off for the first and only Vice President ial debate this cycle. The debate might have seemed normal. But almost nothing was normal. Vance lied about issues like abortion, Health Care, immigration. And try today rewrite history. But arguably, the biggest moment of the night, Jd Vance is on that stage because Mike Pence had the audacity to certify the election results. Here is what Jd Vance said when he was pressed tonight about trumps long running election lies. Would you again seek to challenge this Years Election results even if every governor certified the results. We are focused on the future. It is really rich for democratic leader to say that Donald Trump is a unique threat to democracy when he peacefully gave over power on january 20th. This was a threat to our democracy in a way we had not seen and manifested itself because of Donald Trumps inability to say. He is still saying he didnt lose the election. Did he lose the election . Im focused on the future. Did Kamala Harris Sensor americans from speaking their mind in the wake of the 2020 covid situation . That is a damning non answer. A candidate out there who refused and now again and im shocked by this. He lost the election. So america, i think you have a really clear choice on this election of who will honor that democracy and who is going to honor Donald Trump. What did you make of that moment . Well, it was, you know, okay. There is a whole lot to unpack. This for eightandahalf rounds. Uhhuh. Was a polished yearly Debate Champion doing what they do. Moving, sliding, ducking, jiving, all of that. And walz was holding his own. Putting out some policy threads and laying down some stuff like that. That moment, that moment, in the ninth round after losing on points, knock out. I dont care where you are on policy. And yes, it is important. We know it is so important. There is so much stuff to into from abortion to the economy. So much stuff they were not able to get into. Folks who have to fundamentally understand The Truth. If you cannot answer that question in 2024, you are unfit for office. It doesnt matter what you did for 89 minutes. That last minute you cannot answer that question because the guy who is watching that you are performing for will kick your behind when you get off that stage tells me and should should tell the country you are unfit for office. Everyone will analyze the hell out of these things. You can debate, baby, no question. You got at that, boo. You do it. But you know when you screw up . You know what, jd, as minnesota said tonight, your behind is on that stage. That exchange was i think a very important moment. I felt for a lot of this debate it was existing in a reality we dont live in. I really did feel there was all this mmm, i agree with you, but let me give you a different point. There was a little too much of that. Everybody showed up as someone i hadnt seen before. Thats not the Governor Wailsome used to seeing. Walz im used to seeing. I think Jd Vance showed up as somebody we dont usually see at all. He cares about the women who died from the policies that Donald Trump said . I think amber should be alive. She should, but lets talk about why she is not. The moderators i have great respect for. Margaret does that. Not what norah does. Given that within that Reality Everyone would love to live in, what does the Vice President say . Im burdened by what it is. So we need to live in the reality of what this election actually is and what the electorate is seeing. And who the candidates actually are. I think the Abortion Portion where Governor Walz i think really deny defend. I think the debate is about performance of policy. And a lot of people will experience this debate from the the clips on our show, on their local news. Those are two very clip able moments. Housing is the Number One issue for a lot of folks across the country. But look. I dont want people to be. I dont want people to be upset or get anxiety or anything. I dont want people to be mad at you. But all i could do is tell you The Truth. The truth is when you talk to people across the country not in a bubble every day, im not talking about just High School students or college students. Im talking about millennials like myself. Younger people, i have been personally dismayed. And michael, you are on a College Campus on a regular basis, you tell me. By the number of young people saying i dont know if im going to vote. What was your take . My take was that The One moment clarified a lot of the other lies. That you saw Jd Vance trying to modulate his position On Abortion. On immigration. On Health Care. So do i. And the fact he has been in the ninth Inning Couldnt Help but say he was lying about this. What else are you lying about that . That is why the format is a little funky. I want to give you a sense. Here is Jd Vance talking trying to defend Donald Trumps Quote Concept of a plan when it comes to replacing the affordable care act. I think that you know, a lot of people have criticized the concept of a plan remark. As Tim Walz knows from 12 years in congress, you will not propose a 900 Page Bill standing on a Debate Stage. And can we listen to Jd Vance on preexisting conditions and we will talk about the two of them together . We have law Ins Place to protect people with preexisting conditions. We want to keep the regulations in place but also make the Health Insurance Marketplace function a little bit better. What Governor Walz is not true. A lot of what happened and the Reason Obama Care was crushing under its own weight, a lot of young healthy people were leaving the exchanges. Donald trump actually helped address that problem and he did so in a way that preserved Peoples Access to coverage who had preexisting conditions. Donald trump tried to save Obama Care . I havent been in the room when all of that was supposedly happening, the whole repeal and replace. Listening to before trump showed up, what the Game Plan was trust me america. Saving Obama Care was not a priority of Donald Trump. And that was one of those moments where you go okay, he lying. And america should have looked at that moment and said if you lie about this and that is before the big lie of January 6th. They dont know that he is lying. What if they dont know . Thats my biggest concern. There are people who dont know thats a lie because its normal. If he was like nope, trump helped fix a lot of it. The governor came back and clearly laid out what plan he is describing was pre, what life was like before preexisting conditions were covered and Jd Vance was like nope, Donald Trump strengthened Obama Care. You have to say he didnt and tell us why that is a lie. For people who dont know better. Thats where you know, that is where the break down in the governors response. I agree with you. I agree with you. But, when Mitt Romney is your president ial nominee, you can say that to the Vice President ial candidate. When Donald Trump is your president ial nominee, you cant give that kind of runway. Because everything that is setting up to that moment is a lie. And Jd Vance knows No One in that administration was about saving Obama Care when for four years what did we hear . Repeal and replace. They did not put a plan on the table. There was no plan out of the republican caucus for Obama Care. I dont know if this stuck out to you. I know, we know, that the Vice President whoever it is, number two on the door, not Number One. Right . But tonight, No One made the distinction that you know, the Vice President doesnt actually, you know what i mean . You have been at number two. It is just that i think not every single time at least one point in time it needs to be corrected. There are Voters out there democrats are trying to get who do think that the Vice President has the power to do something. Look, Joe Biden is the president. Joe biden negotiated those drug prices. The Vice President was there and she helped. But that was, Joe Biden is still the president and i dont know what advisers are telling the democratic candidates they should not speak about the democratic president. But, bad strategy. What do you think you will be doing as Vice President of the united states . What do you think Donald Trump will let you do as Vice President of the united states . Come on, man. You are hoping you can get in the car and go down to the white house. Come on. He has leaned back in his chair. And you are dot know what that means. There is a lot more to get to. So after a quick break, Texas Congresswoman Jasmine crocket joins us live from the Spin Room. You are watching the coverage of the Vice President ial debate. What i know is under Kamala Harris, more people are covered than they have before. Those of you listening, this is critical to you. Now Donald Trump all of a sudden wants, go back and remember this, he ran on the first thing he was going to do on Day One was to repeal Obama Care. On Day One, he tried to sign an Executive Order to repeal the aca. He signed onto a lawsuit to repeal the aca but lost at the Supreme Court and he would have repealed the aca had it not been for the courage of John Mccain to save that bill. We have a new statement out about the Vice President ial debate. Quote, tonight Governor Walz showed exactly why Vice President harris picked him. He is a leader who cares about the issues that matter the most to The American people. A straight talker focused on real solutions and a Slick Politician who spent the whole night defending Donald Trumps devision and failures. Joining us now live from the Spin Room is Jasmine Crockett of texas. One of the national cochairs for the Harris Walz campaign. Good to see you. I just want to get your thoughts about tonight. We settled here at the table. That there were some moments like for example the January 6th moments that hit a lot of nerves. What do you stood out as a clarifying moment for this debate . I think the Health Care conversation was another one of those conversations. You know. Jd vance was given a really tough job. He had to defend the indesensible and he went in there, he was doing his darnedest right . Standing up for January 6th making sure he could defend concepts of the plan, but the reality is what the governor laid out. If you have preexisting conditions you will be left behind when we look back to what the world looked like before the affordable care act. It was daunting. I think the conversation, you know, Jd Vance tries to dance around it and say i dont think republicans are talking about it the right way. But no. The problem is what you have done about it. They have decided to throw us into chaos. If i just have to be honest, that is the only thing that Donald Trump is really good at. Finding us in a space of chaos when we look at the border conversations. I think that you know, we really could have highlighted the fact that when given an opportunity to be this bipartisan being, that we saw Jd Vance trying to be on the stage today, Jd Vance voted down the bipartisan bill on the border. The same way that he voted down an opportunity to protect ivf when there were republicans did it. He talks a good game. He was slick with it. But only one person came with a record. That was the governor who talked about what his state is doing and honestly, if you want a country that looks like a place in which Amber Woods would still be alive, that is what we were given the version of. Governor walz talking about infertility and Republicans Project 2025. Take a look. Project 2025 will have a registry of pregnancies. Limit access if not eliminate access to infertility treatments. For so many of you out there listening its why i have a child. Thats nobody elses business but those things are being proposed and the catch all on this is well the states will decide. What is right for texas might not be right for washington. Thats not how this works. This is basic human rights. I thought it was very strong when the governor said how could we as a nation say your life and rights, someone who is in one of the States Name checked there. Texas. How do you respond to this assertion from Jd Vance to just come down to the states . Its a joke. And honestly, for him to sit there and say amber should be alive. Yeah, i agree. Just like when there was an opportunity to talk about gun violence. All those kids should be alive. There are things you can do. You are running for office to make sure we dont have to continuously send thoughts and prayers because you are actually implementing policy that will better peoples lives and protect them. The fact i didnt have the same access to Health Care as someone who lives in a quote unquote Woker State doesnt make sense. It shouldnt be that literally i should lose my life trying to bring a life into this world because doctors are concerned they will going to go to prison. They are trying to figure out what the idiots in the legislature are going to do if most of those people if not all of them literally have no expertise whatsoever in anything that has to do with women bringing forth children in this world. You know, congresswoman, as i listen to you, it really strikes me that Senator Vance sounded like someone else. He sounded sympathetic to women and children and agreed with Governor Walz on how to tackle some of the big issues. What does the campaign do with that with this many days as we are having, we are having a little over a month out from Election Day. And people are voting in many of the key critical states. I already know one of the ads, a senior Campaign Aide Tech noting that the January 6th exchange is already being flipped into an ad by the Harris Walz campaign. But what else . How do you reach people and close some of the gaps that exist not just with moderates, Voters or independent Voters or these undecided Voters that everybody thinks they know. Im talking base democratic Voters. I think people that are tuned in watching nbc, abc, whatever network they are watching. Even fox. I think the people that are actually in the news and watching the news, i think they have made up their minds. Regardless of whether or not they will say they are undecided i think they have made up their mind. Whether or not they want to reveal what they are doing is a whole other issue. There are people that literally have not paid attention to anything and those are the people that im trying to talk to. And those are the people that are going to make the difference because this race will be. The real people struggling as it relates to how it relate to abortion. People are understanding how harmful it is. And they want to run from project 2025. Because it is probably the only thing right now polling lower than the Supreme Court. But let me tell you, i may sure to highlight, trumps name is mentioned 312 times in project 2025. It is a terrible Book Manifesto on how to take us back and i think if we continue to hammer what they have actually outlined, their actual plan is to cause more Harm And Destruction to those of us that are here. And i also think we have a really good opportunity. Look what they did to the people in springfield, ohio. Is that the type of leadership you want . Is someone that will literally go after people in our country knowing that they are spreading falsehoods and lies and double down and have children that are enduring Bomb Threats . These are not decent people. No matter how slick Jd Vance sounded today. There is nothing decent about him. When we look back at the interviews he has done and his record, he doesnt have receipts for doing anything that will carry us forward he doesnt have a bipartisan record. We know that Walz And Harris have always stood for the people. I believe this is why the congresswoman is in the Spin Room for the campaign, yall. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of texas. Next, stay with us folks, Tim Miller joins us at the table. You are watching Msnbcs Coverage of the Vice President ial debate. Dont go anywhere. Presidential debate. Dont go anywhere. How can we as a nation say that your life and your rights as basic as the right to control your own body is determined by geography . Joining us now, Tim Miller. President of reproductive freedom for all. Welcome to the table after midnight. So turns out they can read a poll. And they realized their positions on Reproductive Rights are not popular. Who knew . Well, i think Jd Vance did a masterful job of changing the tune. He ecod something the Vice President did against Donald Trump. He brought humanity and compassion. He told the story. She would be alive if she lived in minnesota. That was a powerful moment. How can we say your life and your rights as basic at the right to control your own body is determined by geography. The restoration of roe v. Wade. You hear us talking exactly the same. In the past, you have supported a federal ban On Abortion after 15 weeks. You are making the united states the most barbaric pro abortion regime anywhere in the entire world. Why have you changed your position . First of all, i never supported a national ban. I did when i was running in senate in 2022 talk about setting minimum national standards. Isnt setting a minimum national standard the same thing . Do we is have a clip . Lie, lie, lie. So many lies. Has implications for everything regardless of what the individual states are doing. So republicans speaking out on both sides of their mouths here when they say oh. We want the states to decide. California is going to be different than you know. We have seen what happens. We have seen what happens. When states decide, amber dies. That is the powerful point. The other thing to remember is will they veto or sign a national Abortion Ban misses the fact that Donald Trump overturned roe by appointing these justices and they have a plan and Jd Vance wrote a letter and signed it to Merrick Garland asking them to invoke the Comstock Act for them to enact an Abortion Ban without congress. Jd vance was so good. He is not totally lying but not totally telling The Truth. The audacity was the story about his friend who needed the abortion. The friend with no name. So much outrage. How dare he invoke a story of someone in his own life who would be under the current law unable to access that care. That to me sums up so much about Jd Vances performance tonight. Pure gaslighting. Thats what you saw happen with Mark Robinson in North Carolina. Oh, let me pivot on the abortion issue. I thought you were going to talk about the pizza in the back of the porn shop. That was a different thing that happened in North Carolina. Jd vance was a lot smoother than Mark Robinson making that pivot at least. The first 30 minutes i feel like im back in 2024. Where, on the Debate Stage, it felt a lot like 1998 at times. Jd advance has said if a young woman gets raped and she is just going to bring that baby to term. That is just the situation. Thats unfortunate. He said he doesnt frankly care much about the people in ukraine. A lot of racist lies about Haitians Eating Dogs and cats. Hell have to do racist lies about haitians eating cots and cats. If you are single woman without kids you are deranged. Jd vance is a jerk. I wish i could say a worse word than that. But we are still on table. He is a bad person. I understand that Tim Walz was trying to be affable and positive and my personal edification of seeing Jd Vance taken down a peg. But still, i felt like the tone of it, i think your heart is in the right place. That is not really right actually. Jd vance is an extremist and he is pretty sociopathic. And he is a liar. I dont know if you were watching the debate tonight, if that is what you got. Can we play . Jd Vance Talks about earning Peoples Trust. Specifically, this comes amid the conversation about abortion and women and he really concedes that republicans havent got it right. Take a listen to Jd Vance about earning Peoples Trust. So many young women would love to have families. So many see an unplanned pregnancy as something that will destroy their Livelihood And Education and relationships and we have dot to earn Peoples Trust back. That is why we are committed to pro family policies. Making Child Care more accessible. Making fertility treatments more accessible because we have to do a better job at that. You know this stuff better than me. Is there a Red State where they are doing this . Yeah, name the state where you have republican Ledge Laytures making families a priority. Fertility for those families available. You cant. You can name purple states where democrats are trying to do those things and republicans are blocking them so i mean, you can actual not name republicans right now who are advocating for shifting policy on codifying the federal right to abortion. We fixate on the national Abortion Ban. Fine. Will you codify a federal right to abortion . Will you make abortion accessible . No, no, no. It is in project 2025. So i feel like we are giving them a pass. I also heard a lot of pushback from the movement around the fact that the first Abortion Question came 45 minutes into the debate and explain how minnesota is too good for women On Abortion. How is Tim Walz too progressive . That was 45 minutes before the first January 6th question. You know. We all have something to be frustrated about. And an hour before the ukraine question that never came. You are sticking with us, theres a lot more to break down. Well be right back. Down. Well be right back. What does a robot know. About love . I intend to be a president for all americans, and Focus On Investing right now in you, The American people. And we can chart a new way forward. Im Kamala Harris and i approve this message. We really dont want people to think of Feeding Food like ours is spoiling their dogs. Good, Real Food is simple. It looks like food, it smells like food, its what dogs are supposed to be eating. When a tough cough finds you on the go, a syrup would be. Silly woo hey try new robitussin soft chews. Packed with the power of robitussin. In every bite. Easy to take cough relief, anywhere. Chew on relief, Chew On A Robitussin The Night came during the conversation On Immigration. In fact, it got so heated that the microphones had to be muted at one point. Youve got to reimplement normal transborder policies, rebuild The Wall, reimplement separations. The real Separation Policy in this country is unfortunately Kamala Harris wide open border. This is what happens when you cant solve it, youd demonize it. Talking about it and creating stories to bring attention to this. That vilified a large number of people who were here legally. The republican governor said its not true, dont do it. There are consequences for this. So, immigration, anybody . Many Use Language to describe The Way that Jd Vance handled abortion and i would like to use to describe The Way he handled immigration, the audacity to talk about Family Separation knowing full well not only what the Trump Administration did during the first four years in power, but to know the things they have promised should they get a second term. It was outrageous. Yeah, and i thought Tim Walz did really good in the segment. I thought it was one of his better segments of the night by a, making Jd Vance held accountable for the fact that Donald Trump scuttled the immigration bill. Making fun of him for the fact that only 2 of The Wall got built. I wouldve said i was surprised that Jd Vance was demonizing legal immigrants. I thought he balanced that he cared about Border Security and he cares about Peoples Humanity and going on offense against Jd Vance. I thought he did a nice job on that. Sometimes democrats struggle On Immigration. You could tell he was really wellprepared to go on offense on that issue. Yeah, he literally there was a point where he was like i believe vance wants to solve this but we have the clip. Lets play the clip. I believe Senator Vance wants to solve this, but by standing with Donald Trump and not working together to find a solution, it becomes a Talking Point and when it becomes a Talking Point like this, we dehumanize and villa nice other human beings. With all due respect, are we to believe that he does in fact want to solve this, given that he was in the u. S. Senate when this bipartisan piece of legislation came through . No, i dont think they want to solve it, but heres what i thought was interesting about what we just heard there and we heard it throughout the evening and now with a little bit more introspection after absorbing this, what i am sort of concluding is what we saw was minnesota nice, right, that sort of folksy was really kind of creating a little bit of wedge between Donald Trump and Jd Vance. I agree. I actually thought he was doing something, maybe subtlety is lost in a Debate Format but i think he was trying to do something like hey, lets pretend you are a decent guy. Lets try to talk you over from the dark side, right . But Donald Trump, you can say whatever you want, but you are standing with evil. You are standing with darth vader, so its like you are going to lie in gaslight but lets pivot back to what trump is about, and shifted back to trump and i thought that was useful. I dont know. I just feel i am sorry to be the person pulling in the cheerios tonight. You know that is not usually me, okay . Im cheering you on. All i can do is tell The Truth. Jd vance was picked for the ticket because he represents institutionalization of trumpism, a continuation of trumpism, so therefore, and i think when i am saying no, im critical of the niceties i guess i think i want you know, shout him down. Now, im from nebraska. I know how to give nebraska nice, you know. I just you know, i can give it. The nicety there is a middle ground between we going to bake cookies and you dont really want to be with that bad man, trump, and like really shouting him down and i think the governor found the middle ground maybe later in the debate but truly, you dont always have to start everything with i think he means well. That was like i heard some interesting things. Yeah, he also just objectively does not mean well On Immigration. How can you try to say like oh, i think youre trying to be nice. Jd vance is The One that started the racist lies about haitian haitian feeding the dogs and cats. He did bring that up. He did bring it up in this context of i believe you want to solve it, you just dont. The Truck Vance Ticket needs to be pushed out on the deep streams. I think there are some out there, the centerright Voters who voted for romney that just need that last nudge and also theres another group of people i believe that is not paying that close of attention and they also need to be reminded that now, these guys are extreme and they want to deport 20 Million people and they dont want to just deport the bad guys. They want to deport people that are here legally. They said it. They want to deport the moms. Donald trump said that in and out of you well we want to deport a lot of people then will get that one mom that didnt do anything wrong in the media will focus on that. Yeah, will focus on that. I think maybe Tim Walz maintained his Popularity Tonight and did fine but if the other part of the objective was demonstrating how extreme the ticket is i think ultimately, i dont actually disagree with [ inaudible ] you see how you did that . Thats how you do it. But, i do think the focus has to keep being on trump and i think Governor Walz did that very well. Youre saying crazy stuff, sure, whatever. Lets talk about trump. Heres the thing for me probably more than anything else and ive done my fair share of debates in prep and is a candidate and there is something to be said about recapping your opponent. And that, i think, is something that was missing for three quarters of this debate from my perspective. It did not come until that last moment as we said at the top of the show when, on the January 6 question, Jd Vance was exposed. Tim walz did that well. He set him up, and my only thing was and i just remember i was going to send this to my colleagues. But i had to delete the tweet because i mean the text, because my thing was On Abortion, especially On Abortion and immigration, i thought he played his weakest hand, and that is where Jd Vance was his slickest, and for me, i thought this man is standing here lying to the country. Callout the lie. Call it, just boldface ugly call it out and that was when i didnt need the minnesota nice. What i needed was an uppercut, because On Immigration and abortion, the two things that strike people most personally, stripping someone from their family, denying them access to healthcare. That to me was where i thought he needed to do a little bit more damage but you know, we can ive said my piece. There will be Tv Ads coming. The Ads Matter and the clips matter. Welcome back to to msnbc Special Coverage Of The First and only Vice President ial debate, a debate that took place as urgent crises loom both here and abroad with conflicts expanding in the Middle East and entire communities under floodwater in the wake of hurricane helene. Both matters were addressed right at the top of tonights debate. Donald trump actually delivered stability in the world and he did it by establishing effective deterrence. People were afraid of stepping out of line. I ran, which launched this attack, has received over hundred billion dollars in unfrozen dollars thanks to the Kamala Harris administration. What did they use that money for . They use it to buy weapons they are launching against their allies in god for but eventually launching against the united states, as well. Went Donald Trump was in office it was Donald Trump, we had a coalition of nations that had boxed irans nuclear program in. Donald Trump Hold that program and put Nothing Else in its place so iran is closer to a Nuclear Weapon than they were before because of Donald Trumps fickle leadership. In appalachia all across the southeast they need their government to do their job and i committed went Donald Trump as president again the government will put the citizens of this Country First when they suffer from a disaster. You asked about climate change. Senator vance has said that there is a Climate Problem in the past. Donald trump called it a hoax and then joked that these things would make more Beachfront Property to be able to invest in. To call it a hoax and to take the Oil Company executives to maralago, say give me money for my campaign and ill let you do whatever you want, we can be smarter than that. Can i just make a point about iran and the money because i do think obviously iran is in the news and i thought it was important that they started with the crises that people are seeing on the news right now but when it comes to the money in iran, iran never got the money. The money was transferred to qatar and then after october 7th, on october 12, i believe, the united states and qatar is made it very clear that the money is locked down in iran should not access it. It seems like a small point, but in general what Jd Vance was doing on the stages saying what, Donald Trump was safe. Look at all this conflict now under Joe BidenKamala Harris and its revisionist history. There was a lot of revisionist history that look, at The End of the day, we all recall, and i think this is going to have to be the next 35 days of the political strategy for the harris team, is to remind people of what actually happened, for heaven sakes. Donald Trump Block to the iran deal, which is why iran is now two weeks when they go to production, two weeks away from creating a Nuclear Weapon. Donald trump created the Exit Strategy for afghanistan. And in the biden administration, the only thing you know what they did . They just changed the timeline. They said okay, we are not going to leave in june. Were going to leave in late august or whatever, so Donald Trump did all these things in his four years and Jd Vances Role Tonight was to go in and cleanup on aisle nine through 15 with one big brush, and just keep stirring and cleaning the entire time. And he looked and again, this goes to a point i believe one of you made in the last hour, he was picked for a reason and one of the reasons is what you saw tonight. He can make the most sour Milk Taste a little bit like honey, but you know whats going to happen tomorrow morning, thats going to work on your gut, baby. You going to feel that, trust me. That bad milk is going to catch up with you and that is what the selection has to be about, not drinking the sour milk, because that is what it is. No matter how much honey Jd Vance put in it on trying to sweettalk you all into believing that Donald Trump cares about women enough not to put in place a national ban On Abortion, that Donald Trump actually cares enough about what happens in your neighborhoods and communities with respect to migrants coming into the country. He is so concerned that hes really trying to help that is the honey. In the sour milk. It still sour milk and that is the problem we have in this election, is that people want the taste of honey, but it is honey. Not honey. That is where we wake up sick the next morning. And, im lactose intolerant. In addition to the Merck Shopping some of the policies in real time, i also thought that we watched Jd Vance workshop both a line of defense for Donald Trump, in the line of attack on Kamala Harris. The line of defense for Donald Trump we know if someone says something twice, three times, that is a candline. Got to make sure i get to that, and one of the things he said twice was, they keep telling you what Donald Trump will do in a future term. They keep trying to make you believe that he is a danger, but in actuality, all you need to do is look at his term in office, and he distills Donald Trumps time in office to inflation was down and take him wages were higher. Nothing else. Doesnt mention anything else because we know the economy is top of mind for people that there is still some Tender Reminiscence of what Donald Trumps term was like and he doesnt touch anything else than the attack against Vice President harris is this idea that the Vice Presidency is some allpowerful role where he said well, if all of her policies are so great then why isnt she implementing them now . How can she be asking for a promotion when she is in doing these things now, which Jd Vance understands the limits of the Vice Presidency, but to me, that attack and the defense were a couplet because they are so easy to say around the Dinner Table when you are trying to persuade someone on who to vote for. Its not policy. Its not unusual, just a reimagining of what Donald Trumps presidency was, and it is a valuation of Kamala Harris [ inaudible ] i think one could the governor did have to make i know im being very critical tonight, but the governor does have to make decisions in that debate like do you want to spend your time correcting every single light or do you want to tackle it once and make sure your statement is out there, then continue to push forward with what you want to do. I think the issue with the revisionist history and he did call out the revisionist history particularly when it comes to the iran deal, like he talked about when he says well we will sometimes hear revisionist history about what Donald Trump was in office. When it came to saying what the Vice President could do, Jd Vance would say under Harris Administration xyz has happened and sometimes the governor would say under Harris Administration there has yet to be a Harris Administration. There is a bidenHarris Administration and i did think there was a minnesota my script to be put in there to say jd, you and i are both on the Stage Vying for the number two spot but you know, lest we get ahead of ourselves, we are not Number One. Like theres a way to break it down and do that but it is effective because people at home , there is a swath of The American public again that Congressman Crockett talked about who are just tuning in and they do think the Vice Presidency does not have these limitations on it. They do believe that Donald Trumps economy was actually not a bad president although he was benefiting from the obama presidency. Can we play what was said about criticizing the response . Our hearts go out to those innocent people. Our prayers go out to them, and we want as robust and aggressive a federal responses we can get to save as many lives as possible and of course afterwards to help people in those communities rebuild. These are communities that i love, some of them that i know very personally in appalachia all across the southeast. They need their government to do their job and i commit when Donald Trump is president again, the government will put the citizens of the Country First. He deferred money from fema. Does Jd Vance not remember Hurricane Matthew in 2017 . That was during the Trump Administration when the governor , roy cooper, democrat, and this gets to the point, contacted the government and asked fema could you please help us, this is what we need, and Donald Trumps administration said no. And gave the 1 of what they asked for for recovery after that devastating hurricane in North Carolina and the reason they only offered up 1 is because it was a democratic governor sitting in the seat at the time. That is what Donald Trump will do, america, and he tells you this. This is the part that kills me. He tells us every time what is going to do and everyone acts like its the first time theyre hearing it or its never happened before and Jd Vance knows better, and that is such a disingenuous bs moment, trying to level up that Donald Trump is going to somehow be some humanitarian to care about what happens to i commit, we commit that we will take care of america when Theres Trouble from a hurricane or a storm. Well, you didnt do it. In 2017. So, what makes us think youre going to do it in 2027 . I do think right out the gate this is a reminder that the stakes are extraordinarily high, and whoever the team is that america chooses is going to be faced with innumerable challenges both here, at home and abroad. We dont need to imagine that as a theoretical. We are watching it in real time and i also think these past few years ive really brought the role of the Vice Presidency and to focus both in terms of the role that Mike Pence played on January 6, holding the line for our democracy, being willing to be one of the only people to go Toe To toe with Donald Trump and paying the political price of that decision then weve seen more recently with Vice President harris emerging at the top of the ticket, i do think people are looking at assessing these candidates and saying, who would i feel safer with . Or do i feel more secured with, who i feel more assured with in a way that in the past im not sure people who are thinking of the Vice Presidency feel the same way. I think it would take a slightly different tacked on that. I agree with the core point. The Vice Presidency of cheney and Joe Biden were very different from other vice presidencies, including Kamala Harris and probably the next Vice President because of the circumstances of 9 11, and because of the circumstances of the economic crash, the Housing Crash of 2009. And so, their roles were very different, and each of those Vice President s or seasoned political actors who had constituencies on capitol hill, and had constituencies on k street, which is basically the Wall Street of washington, d. C. , who had constituencies in other parts of government who could use and manipulate those constituencies to further the presidency, so they were given a great deal more play than what you see Kamala Harris have right now, and even what weve seen before, so i think people kind of have this sort of mixed vision of what the Vice President ial role really is. What you saw happening with Kamala Harris and what you saw with dan quayle, thats more traditional Vice President ial timber, and in terms of the responsibilities. Look, the nature of the Vice Presidency is that you do the president handles the most pressing things that land on his desk. Youre not making Executive Decisions on a day in day out basis. Youre not. Youre an adviser to the president and sometimes the president asks you to take on something and you take it on and you do it. A lot of the work of the Vice Presidency, people do not see. Its been 30 years since the Vice President has been the nominee on republican or democratic ticket. The last Vice PresidentWe Saw Run for president was al gore. With mike at the answer but in the meantime, Jason Palmer and Paul Married join the discussion. There is much more of our special coverage ahead. We are going to look at that Vice President ial debate a little closer so stick around after this short break. Look, Donald Trump was in office. We will sometimes hear revisionist history but when Donald Trump was in office it was Donald Trump who, we had a coalition of nations that had boxed irans nuclear program and, the ability to advance it. Donald trump pulled that program and put Nothing Else in its place so i ran is closer to a Nuclear Weapon than they were before because of Donald Trumps fickle leadership and when i ran shutdown an american aircraft in international airspace, Donald Trump tweeted because that is the standard diplomacy of Donald Trump and when iranian missiles did fall near u. S. Troops and they received traumatic brain injuries, Donald Trump wrote it off as headaches. At betmgm, everyone gets a welcome offer. So whether youre courtside trying to hit the over. I unfortunately think that we have to increase securities in our schools. We have to make the doors locked better. We have to make the doors stronger. We have to make the windows stronger and we have to increase School Resource officers because the idea that we can magically wave a wand and taking guns out of the hands of bad guys just doesnt fit with recent experience so weve got to make our schools safer. Sometimes it just is the guns. And there are things that you can do about it but i do think this is one and i think this is a healthy conversation. I think there is a capacity to find solutions on this that work, protect the second amendment and protect our children. Thats a priority. Joining us now, jason johnson, would professor at morgan State University in baltimore. He is also an msnbc political Contributor And Tara palmeri, senior Correspondent And Host of the somebodys got a win podcast. The lollipop is made an appearance, jason. I was not impressed with Jd Vances answer but i did not expect a good answer. His answers like Build A better wall, build stronger windows. These are not answers when it comes to kids being shot out and people being frightened in schools. I expected Jd Vance to do what he did which is he started with and trying to redefine myself. Im not the couch guy. Im not the cat lady guy. That is his whole point and he seems to have an instant polls move from being hitler to ed amine. He still unpopular, still dont like the guy but hes improved in some big way but objectively he is a better debater than Tim Walz, but as far as presenting yourself and defending the top of the ticket, they failed. That is the thing. Jd vance looks better. Donald trump does not look any better after this debate than he did the first time in your goal as a Vice President ial pick is to make your boss look better and that is where i think Tim Walz was more successful. I actually think he succeeded because he actually communicated a policy for Trump And Trump could not communicate a policy at all in the first debate. And, he attacked Kamala Harris which is not something Donald Trump could really do and defined her because trump was so obsessed with defending himself. Even tonight i heard from my top sources in advance that trump wanted jd to defend him even though they knew that was a waste of time, because what they wanted to spend their time on was defining Kamala Harris because there are some Voters out there, believe it or not, you still want more information about her. They still think there is ambiguity around her so thats the opening. Is your time to pivot away and go after Kamala Harris and that is why you did not hear him going after, you know, Tim Walz over stolen valor or even really following up on the Tiananmen Square stuff. He kind of just let it all pass and was like pivot immigration Inflation EconomyKamala Harris, and it was the same on the other side, too. I think they did a decent job for the buses in my opinion if the job was to attack the other persons boss. What i find interesting though is that there is some of Jd Vance that Cant Help but be Jd Vance. If your point is that they went in there nothing on the couch, nothing on the cat ladies sure, he hit that mark but in this exchange i want to play, this is both walls and vents on childcare, there were some subtleties that stuck in there. Take a listen. I had to go back to work five days after my kids were born. This allows you to stay home a certain amount of time. What we know is that gets the child off to a better start, the family works better, we stay there employers. We get more consistency and not so Kamala Harris has made it a priority. We implemented it in minnesota and we see growth. That is how we become a pro business state. Im married to a beautiful woman who was a pro mother to our beautiful kids but also as a brilliant corporate litigator and i am still proud of her but being a Working Mom even for somebody with all the advantages of my wife is extraordinarily difficult and not just difficult from a policy perspective. She had access to paid Family Leave because she worked for a bigger company but the cultural pressure on young families and especially young women, i think, makes it really hard for people to choose the Family Model they want. The lot of young women would like to go back to work immediately. Some would like to spend a little time home with the kids. Some would like to spend longer at home with the kids. We should have a Family Care Model that makes choice possible but i think this is a very important substantive difference between Donald Trumps and Kamala Harriss approach. Its interesting. Its almost like he doesnt have children. She has these beautiful children. She needs to figure out of the subtlety and i get what he was trying to do. [ inaudible ] Jd Vance is every terrible, evil exhusband who Gas Lights you in divorce court. Like thats not who he is, right . Anyone who has listened to Jd Vance and his Podcast Nonsense for the last several months you know this isnt what he believes. You know he wants women at home so when he gets there and tries to say im this Progressive Guy and i care about women and my mother was on oxycontin and this, that and the other its nonsense, and anyone this is a big thing about these debates. Partisans watch debates. Voters watch clips. Voters are going to see that clip and like this doesnt sound like the Guy Effort for the last four or five months and i dont believe him. Partisans are going to be angry because oh my gosh why didnt Tim Walz do a Ww C . Because Tim Walz didnt have to do that tonight. It was just a matter of saying hey, my boss is great and michael, you pointed this out earlier and it was the same thing i noticed. I think he was trying to make space between Jd Vance and Donald Trump. You know, because i think if Tim Walz had come out there Breathing Fire than Jd Vance wouldve been like i dont know, this guy seems crazy to me. As are not a happy medium between literally Breathing Fire and like Baking Cookies . And Tim Walz is not a good debater. But he helped Jd Vance [ inaudible ] Tim Walz helped Jd Vance. He agreed with him a lot. He recognized him. He said i agree with you on so many points and he allowed him to not come off like a. We thought the whole time that he was going to be like this is some like educated yale kid, im more like you. Im folksy, im a teacher, im a coach you know, and instead you know, jd worked at investment firms. He worked for peter teal. He did not bring up any of his background and you see the polls that show Jd Vance approvals went up. He still below, but he was 22 points below, you know, and so at the same time, tim Walz Approval ratings went up. Does that matter in The End . Im not really sure. We dont know. If you lose the Football Game by a Field Goal or seven points, you still lose. He is still underwater so i dont see that is ultimately been successful and i think that again the clips, you watch the entire debate and Tim Walz is not as good debater is Jd Vance. I went to school with guys like Jd Vance. They do debate society thing, theyve been debating since they were nine. I knew he was going to be a better debater but his answers in the clips and isolation dont look good. The answers about abortion dont look good. The answers about the economy dont look good but the clip that we just played, they dont look good in isolation. One of the reasons i think they dont look good is because, i wrote this down, lies. Lies. Jd vance talked a good game but he lied about american production because it is up, not down. He talks a good game about Obama Care but he lied. Donald trump was not trying to protect Obama Care. He wants to repeal and replace it and by The Way, folks, there is no plan. There is no Plan B and all of you all 27 Million will have no healthcare come 2025 if Donald Trump is your president. He lied about the peaceful transfer of power. Hello. Yes, he lied about that. And, he lied about not supporting a national ban On Abortion and on this point, i stand firm ground because ive been in the room with a lot of these folks, right, and i know where they are on this issue. The Bottom Line is that is the End Game. That is the End Game. It has been from Day One on so i know that as someone who is part of that prolife community, i know it. That is the End Game so when he stands on the stage and pretends i never wanted to do a national abortion, he is lying to you, so to your point, dr. Johnson, i think that is where that number goes back down for him. So, he got that bumper he got 20 . He went from 22 to 3. Yeah, 22 to 3. And now he can be back to 10 so when the clips start coming out and people go you lied to us about abortion, you lied to us about Obama Care. You lied to us about energy production. When are you going to tell us The Truth . You can see it in his own words. Can we play back to back what he said tonight and what he said in 2022 . First of all, i never supported a national band. I certainly would like abortion to be illegal nationally. That is where i said okay, does not support a national ban, he is lying to you. Good point. This is where the following day, the coverage, the socials, the clips, the ads this is when having more Money Matters and Kamala Harris has three times more cash than the term campaign. The question is are they going to spend that on jd, you know . And, trump has been all over the map, by The Way, On Abortion. He felt the need to weigh in on truth social tonight and say he does not support a national band. He was not willing to do that at his own debate. Right . He could not articulate he was worse than Tim Walz on Tiananmen Square in abortion so this is obviously an issue that has dogged him. Will click on the national band thing, those of you who have served in government understand what this process, what Donald Trump is saying and what Jd Vance was saying, so when Donald Trump says i would not sign a national Abortion Ban , he probably wont. You know why . Because he will let it become law without his signature. The policies. Its happening in places all over the country right now. Tactilely so technically, im not lying, but he can save face. The congress will do with the congress will do. They will send him a bill and he will sign it and it will become law without his signature. Jd vance is basically acknowledging [ inaudible ] nobody believes him. His very Third World dictator. Reelect me so you can hold me accountable. Thats not how this works. At The End of the day, the reason you have to explain to everybody why they dont trust you is because they dont trust you for a reason and thats not going to work. You have 40 days. You are not going to convince people you are openminded On Abortion and Tim Walz, one of the few linguistically adroit things he did tonight because he did not do it a lot when Jd Vance is like we want to move to the states no. Then you have situations like what happened in georgia. That was one of his most substantive answers because it was an example he could get up and they were talking about abortion difficulties, you have to give names. Come up with the name of this friend of his. I know shes watching but whats her name. Whats your Friends Name . Would like to talk to her. I know youd like to talk to her. Exactly. To all my friends watching thank you. Actually, you dont get to go. Youre going to stay with us. Dont go. We are going to have a little bit more to come in a moment. When the sun rises, Tim Walz and Vice President harris are heading back out on their bus tour, this time to central pennsylvania. Jd vance meanwhile will head to michigan. Shortly after the debate, the Campaign Chair refocus the conversation on the debate about the top of the ticketsend quote, Vice President harris believes The American people deserve to see her in trump on the Debate Stage one more time. She will be in atlanta on october 23rd. Donald trump should step up and face the Voters. Well, what happens in the next 34 days . That is not happening, i can tell you that. Why not . Because jd did well enough. If he failed, i think that trump would feel like he needed to go out there, but he did well enough. Theyre really happy. I mean Donald Trump jr. Was out there saying it was a master class. He did react, too. Otherwise trump has been asking people privately like should i debate . I know there are some people in his circle says that he has to it looks weak not to but is also saying i won. It is still nice about it. Its pretty obvious that Kamala Harris needs to debate. Shes The One who keeps goading him into it and he knows that. It would be hard for him but i cant imagine debating again. Does she need to debate . Im going to tell you what dan can amend said who is the battleground States Director on the harriswalz campaign. We interviewed him this past sunday and we put up on the Screen Polls that showed Vice PresidentWhat Harris was up one, two, three and a one. [ inaudible ] ive never seen him give us that her step back like i saw, and he was like well, what people need to understand is that she is unknown in this race so we triple down and were like what you mean. Then we put the graphic backup do you mean that most of these boxes are gray and tight and some of them are red . He said i think its really important that we communicate as a campaign that she is the underdog. I say that to say she wants to debate because its my understanding that the campaigns internals say that she is not at two, three, four, five and some of the places. That is more what we talk about his ties and shes running behind in some of these states. Yes, we talked to different internals. This is what everyones going to say. What on earth are you going to say 40 days out, we got this . You have to act like you are behind every single time. So you dont think they are really behind . I dont and heres why. Its not just about the internals. They are not as behind some of these public polls show because i tell people this all the time you have to look at how campaigns behave in addition to what the actual numbers are. If you look at how they are behaving, theyre about to go Spend Money in florida. You dont do that. If you are behind youre not Spending Money in florida. [ inaudible ] the money in florida is about the Senate Race. The fact of the matter is if you thought you had no chance in pennsylvania, if you thought you were absolutely down by five in michigan, if you thought you were in trouble and wisconsin youre not Spending Money in florida. Im not saying Kamala Harris is safe. I dont know whats going to happen but i think it is in their best interest, everyone is going to say they are down. I come at this from just having worked trumps people dont say theyre down. I come at this from having worked as staff on president Ial Campaigns and in the last president Ial Campaign on the president Ial Campaign before that and i am telling you as a recovering strategist, what i have been seeing and hearing from the Voters out there not talking about the polls, from the Voters in the strategy and the things i am hearing from the people that work in the campaign, i am concerned that they are not taken seriously that all of the base democratic Voters they need are going to come out and vote for them. Thats a different point. My point is that and because of that, she is down and some of the states. It is tighter. Is someone who is actually had to spend the money for campaigns, president ial and otherwise, Spending Money in florida is not about the Senate Race or a president Ial Campaign. PresidentIal Campaign is not Spending Money in florida on a senate candidate. Why are they Spending Money in North Carolina . They are Spending Money in georgia, North Carolina and florida. The reason i say that because the other thing to the Professors Point is that what is not being accounted for in any poll right now is all of the newly registered Voters out there who are not who are here, and not hello, oh yes, i have 40 minutes to answer your poll. So, the reality of it is there are a lot of Voters. This is the 16 issue, but it works for democrats this time because democrats now have a lot of Voters that are not getting captured, just like the trump Voters were not captured in 16 on the reality of it is, this campaign is aware of that, which is why theyre placing their money in their ads and some of the strategic locations. To both of your points, that does not mean Game Set and match, but im just telling you , no president Ial Campaign has put money out of their president Ial Coffers in the state for a u. S. Senate race unless that race is tied to their chance to win. Internal campaign people at the senior levels of this campaign, people that i literally used to work with him was in the trenches of, i feel like i could be the experts on this. Theyre not saying theyre going to win florida. Jamie harrison is standing on florida and i think you know [ inaudible ] if you talk to the Minority Leader of the florida hate statehouse, she says abortion is an animating issue and that they flip the State House SeatOn Abortion earlier this year and so there is a possibility for movement, but i think my personal opinion is it is more about the Senate Race because what is our president Kamala Harris without a democratic senate . [ inaudible ] i just want to know look, i elected a president before. James carville elected the president. All i am saying is, people should be concerned. I would love to be wrong on Election Day. I dont want to be right. I want to be wrong but im listening to some of the people. Im with you because i literally ask people on the right and i ask him on the left and both sides tell me theyre going to win. I feel like its 2012 all over again. Let me ask you both a question. Trump did not think he is going to win in 2020. People were packing their bags in 2020. 2016 there were very few people that thought they were going to win. So what are they doing now, then packing the bags . They feel good about pennsylvania. I think theyre going to get more men than Joe Biden did. Thats what theyve hoping for and they feel good about North Carolina electron thinks hes going to outrun Mark Robinson by 15 points, so they feel good about it. [ inaudible ] the reason that we have tight polls now, and again, i make no prediction. I dont know whats going to happen in 40 days but the reason we have tight balls now is because you no longer have shy trump Voters. 2016 and 2020 peoples who didnt want to admit it, there out in the open now. The man tried to take over the country and tried to kill his Vice President. You are down with him no matter what. That is why the polls are closer and why we are not going to have a situation where Donald Trump magically overs over performs. What i think is the mystery group, it is all of these people, all of these young people who did not get to vote in 2020, and dobbs is the first this is their first chance to vote and they are ready. They are hungry. You got some trump ones but you have a large number of young people who are super excited about this election and they have not been cut because theyre all on tiktok and not watching us and not paying attention to the views but they know what they here on campus and theyre going to vote.
